The church mothers who raised Yolanda Pierce, dean of Howard University School of Divinity, were busily focused on her survival. In a world hostile to Black women's bodies and spirits, they had to be. Born on a former cotton plantation and having fled the terrors of the South, Pierce's grandmother raised her in the faith inherited from those who were enslaved. Now, in this book, Pierce reckons with that tradition, building an everyday womanist theology rooted in liberating scriptures, experiences in the Black church, and truths from Black women's lives. Pierce tells stories that center the experiences of those living on the underside of history, teasing out the tensions of race, spirituality, trauma, freedom, resistance, and memory.

A grandmother's theology carries wisdom strong enough for future generations. The Divine has been showing up at the kitchen tables of Black women for a long time. It's time to get to know that God.

Some parts are depressing

Yolanda makes several disturbing statements about slavery which takes the emphasis off of the beauty in this book. .We must learn to forgive .

insightful, inspirational

while I did not agree with some of the authors interpretation of biblical ideology, I nonetheless was inspired by her story. speaking her truth I could feel my spirit rise. this book will go beyond denominational politics and speak to every Christian ✝️

Beautiful

Amazing stories about black peoples history, current and future Africa America. Slavery still hurt black Americans today. We have overcome so much and still have so much more to overcome.

Deeply moving and thoughtful path to life and freedom affirming faith

Deeply spiritual and emotional . Really helpful in reconciling faith, anti racism, feminism. Strongly recommend for those looking for life and freedom affirming faith

One of the best books I ever read.

I didn’t want the stories to end . I could’ve listen many more hours to Dr. Pierce’s reflections on the black woman experience in the church.

She was able to capture so much of what I’ve experienced but didn’t know how to describe.

This will truly be a book that I listen to often. There’s so much social justice, cultural realizations, theology and history that one reading isn’t enough.

My Grandmother's Kitchen Stories

I enjoyed the story. I had a very relatable experience in my grandmother's kitchen growing up. Ms. Pierce took her time to tell the story.

I remember the cliches folks told me as I struggled with the grieving process. She explained the unfathomable pain right on. It was a little slow in delivery.

Recommended by my alumni book club. Be blessed.

Important and a Treasure!

A simply amazing work that should be read by almost every African American woman, most of African American descent, and everyone else looking to grow closer to God, family, and their whole self regardless of faith background. One of the best books I have walked through. Thank you to the author for this amazing work!!!

Wonderful book!

This book took me back to childhood memories of my grandmother and my early life attending church. While I would never claim to think that my memories echo those of Ms. Pierce, her stories are relatable and well told. They also gave an insight into life and hardships of People of Color in a white supremacy world.
