I Enjoyed It

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun premise and I liked how she was treated like a pet. I've read a few alien romances where the human is treated like a pet- but this one really felt that way for the most part. Maeve coming to terms with her new life and what that entails wasn't that much of a hardship for her. Jase never questions she might be anything other than a less intelligent life form and pet. There was a nice contrast in alienness from human customs. The ending was a bit abrupt. She wasn't too unhappy with her position, but still a bit uncomfortable. Then all of a sudden (like literally a couple lines later) she was happy where she was and it was over. I think it could have been just a little longer to explore her new life and make that sudden "all good" perspective transition a little smoother. A fun, entertaining story. This is my first book by this author and I'd listen to more. I wonder if this would continue.

Vivienne Ferrari and James Ford did a good job narrating Maeve and Jase. I only wish Vivienne narrated Maeve's lines in Jase's chapters and vice versa. Jase only has a few lines in Maeve's chapters, and she a few in his, so it shouldn't have been too inconvenient to do.

Okay Ms. Black… I see what you’re doing here.

This is a short, spicy, speculative story that drops you into a “human pet” scenario with zero easing in — and I get the sense that’s the whole point. Far from how I’d describe romance but still entertaining to read. Maeve, bored with Earth and craving connection, answers an alien ad (as one does) and ends up owned, renamed, and retrained by Jase — who wants a replacement for his last human pet, Cherry.

Now, is this about love? Nope. But is it an erotic, lifestyle-forward fantasy of 24/7 submission and identity reprogramming? Very much yes. Maeve does try to hold onto herself at first, even offering her real name and trying to advocate for basic needs. But she’s quickly taught “her place,” and by the end, she seems to embrace the role. Whether that’s empowerment or full assimilation… well, I’ll let you decide.

There’s a kind of bold, almost satirical commentary here — on what it means to be wanted, what people trade for attention, and how quickly submission can be reframed as purpose. And while I still have so many questions (Did Jase ever teach her as opposed to punishing her? Was this about one man’s fantasy or a group project?), I can’t deny it kept me listening. It’s weird. It’s kinky. It’s a little irksome. But it’s not boring.

The narration worked well for a quick listen, though the intensity of the content may not be for everyone.

Final Take:
File this one under “Not a Romance, But Definitely a Vibe.” Entertaining, erotic, and a little unhinged. Read it with curiosity and maybe don’t take it too seriously… I don’t think Maeve did either.

The Aliens are coming!

After listening to this audiobook, I will think twice before commenting on random videos on the internet! This is what happened to the heroine. Her comment was, "Take me, I'm bored!" And this is exactly what happened to her. Things quickly become interesting, and she is no longer bored. Yes, this is a super spicy story and is a great escape book.

Alien abduction, pet play, and emotional surrender well written, although not my vibe.

Let me start by saying this: the novella is well written. The pacing works, the narration is solid, and the emotional tone is consistent throughout. But the story itself? Not my vibe.

Maeve gets abducted by an alien named Jase and is renamed “Cherry,” then treated like a pet in a master/slave dynamic. If you’re into power imbalance, pet play, or kinkier sci-fi with emotional discomfort baked in, this is exactly your kind of read. I can absolutely see how someone who enjoys that dynamic would find this compelling.

I’m not one who enjoys power imbalances and watching Maeve settle so easily into her new role was hard to hear. I kept waiting for resistance, for fire, for her to push back but instead, she adapts with barely a flicker of protest. Although the writing is still solid here.

And then there’s Jase. He’s supposed to be a superior being, but somehow doesn’t understand basic human care? He’s confused about bathroom needs, even though he has had a 'pet' before? . I was expecting more of advance alien beings but that might be me leaning into my discomfort with the power imbalance, or maybe just forgetting this is a novella, not a full-blown sci-fi epic. Either way, I can accept that as a reader.

So while I didn’t enjoy the content, I do appreciate the writing. Olympia Black knows how to build tension and create atmosphere and world building. I’m giving it a 3 out of 5, not because it’s bad, but because it’s just not my kind of story. For readers who love dark sci-fi with kink and emotional edge, this one will absolutely be a hit for you.

NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE TOTO

Jase and Maeve. She saw a caption IF YOU WANT TO BE ABDUCTED BY AN ALIEN PLEAS COMMENT. She sees all kinds of comments so she leaves one also thinking its a joke. When she wakes up .. well not in Kansas anymore Toto. Not quite my usual read/listen but it was intriguing and interesting and quite entertaining. Some of the things done to her are quite wierd.

Weird, Wild, and Fun

As you might expect, this story was undeniably bizarre—so incredibly weird! However, that’s exactly what made it such an absolute delight. It fully embraced its strangeness in the best way possible. There were plenty of gross moments—actually, a lot of them—but it just added to the story. Overall, it was a fantastic listen, made even better by strong narration that perfectly captured the wild and unsettling atmosphere.

What the heck did I just listen to?

Serious cautionary tale for all who "live" on social media. One random comment made out of boredom turns into being an alien's free-use sex pet.
