Resumen del Editor

In I'll Give You Something to Cry About, Elizabeth Acker gives a stunning account of growing up under the abusive control of an emotionally and mentally ill mother. Elizabeth is forced to become estranged from her father, and struggles alone to create hope and meaning for her life, while serving her mother like a slave. This audiobook is a true account of a daughter's struggle to survive a mother with paranoia, schizophrenia, and manic depression.

The narrator makes this unbearable to listen to.

When I read what this book was about I was instantly intrigued and just had to listen to it. Unfortunately the narrator has made this book so unenjoyable I can’t bare to listen to it, and I have tried many times! The way she narrates the mother to constantly sound bothered and harsh is too much. When voicing the girl she always sounds whiny and meek. It takes away from the actual story with all the exaggerated narrating. I really can’t comment too much on the actual story because all I can remember is the horrible narration!

Very realistic

The narrator paints a very clear and vivid picture of what it is like to grow up in her household. When she is repeating what her mother says, I can almost bet it sounded like exactly how her mother would have said it. I didn’t think she should have tried to make her voice sound like a man though, because that was really fake. When she made the sound of the belt, I got a little bit freaked out it reminded me of being spanked. I feel that there should be a trigger warning on this book since it does sound so realistic.

Reader Comments

This book is recommended to people that survived living with a parent who was mentally ill and was negatively affected by the experience. Having survived living with a mentally ill parent I can say that reading this book has helped me to heal.

Narrator makes me feel as though I'm being abused

I have listened to many similar books but can't go any further with this one. Her voice sounds angry... She is abusing the Listener.

I can't even finish it.

If you never got past 6th grade, this should be right on your reading level. The narrators voice switching from character to character is so amateurish that at times I had to just turn it off. The story is typical of someone who has a very difficult childhood, but it takes a long time to get anywhere. Perhaps if I were reading it, it would be tolerable. I could skip ahead. I am giving up. Not sending it back, since I sent back the last , similar book , "Estranged", by Jessica Gross. Move on.
