Resumen del Editor

“An engaging and heartfelt portrayal of intergenerational trauma and hope." (Kirkus Reviews)

When Ida and her daughter Bessie flee a catastrophic pogrom in Ukraine for America in 1905, they believe their emigration will ensure that their children and grandchildren will be safe from harm. But choices and decisions made by one generation have ripple effects on those who come later, and in the decades that follow, family secrets, betrayals, and mistakes made in the name of love threaten the survival of the family: Bessie and Abe Weissman’s children struggle with the shattering effects of daughter Ruby’s mental illness, of Jenny’s love affair with her brother-in-law, of the disappearance of Ruby’s daughter as she flees her mother’s legacy, and of the accidental deaths of Irene’s husband and granddaughter.

A sweeping saga that follows three generations from the tenements of Brooklyn through WWII, from Woodstock to India, and from Spain to Israel, How to Make a Life is the story of a family who must learn to accept each other’s differences or risk cutting ties with the very people who anchor their place in the world.

Hold Fast to Family, History and Culture - Immigration is Not For the Faint of Heart

How To Make A Life takes us into the lives of an immigrant family who sought refuge and the hope of a better life in America, after surviving horrific murders and torment in their homeland. Chapters move us along the journey, giving us dates and locations, as members, marry, move away, and live life in the new country. Through it all, there's constant emphasis on the familial bond, history and cultural roots. I like the fact that, the author did not sugarcoat the family's history. but allowed the characters to be real and vulnerable in their pain and in their joy. The narrator, Justine Reiss, did a phenomenal job of bringing each character to life and making them so personable. Her performance truly touched my heart and made the scenes more vivid and memorable. I highly recommend this audiobook.

A beautiful collection of life

This extremely well written and thought provoking family album gathers generations of deep love and personal challenges. It’s is a masterpiece of prose and a reminder that all families have difficulties and in the end some can be overcome, and others should be “kept to oneself.”

best narrating!!

I'm new to audio books and struggle with the narration sometimes. This was the favorite narrator by far. Her voice was so pleasant to listen to and she had a gift of subtlety changing her voice for each character.

The story was captivating, weaving through generations.

Andrea Abramowitz

I’ve been a member of our book club for 25+ years. Two & 1/2 years ago when Covid & political unrest was changing life as we knew it, I lost my ability to concentrate on reading our books without my mind wandering. A fellow book member suggested that I try Audible. YAY, it was the perfect fit!
After reading the Book, “How to Make A Life”, our book club took advantage of the opportunity to Zoom with Author, Florence Reiss Kraut. Since the story had many characters throughout several generations, I decided to listen to the book on Audible as a quick review before our ZOOM. WOW, I was blown away by Justine’s reading of her Aunt’s book. Justine’s reading made the characters come alive with their accents and emotions making their personalities more memorable. It gave me a whole new dimension to the characters and the story being told.
Thank you Florence Kraut for writing a book that makes the reader think about their own family tree & roots and choosing her niece to read her book for Audible.
If you belong to a book club & are looking for an amazing experience, go onto NovelNetwork.com to find authors who will Zoom with your club.It was a pleasure meeting, talking with and having Florence Kraut join us for a special book club discussion!
