There are 20 million acres of lawns in North America. In their current form, these unproductive expanses of grass represent a significant financial and environmental cost. However, viewed through a different lens, they can also be seen as a tremendous source of opportunity. Access to land is a major barrier for many people who want to enter the agricultural sector, and urban and suburban yards have huge potential for would-be farmers wanting to become part of this growing movement.

You may think you don’t have the time or the money to start a big permaculture project. But permaculture doesn’t need to be overwhelming. You can start as small as you like, and you can move at a pace that suits you. Don’t feel you have to learn everything in one go and rush out to transform a whole wilderness in a year. Just deal in manageable chunks, and you’ll do just fine. Even if all you have done is tend to a few tomato plants on your window ledge, you can become an expert gardener; all it takes is a little time, patience, and practice.

People have been living off the land for millions of years, and in recent times, self-sustainability has become a hot topic. Rising costs in supermarkets and the lack of true organic produce have led to more and more people turning to their own gardens to provide some of their food. The only way to eat truly organic and healthy produce is to grow your own, and over the years, I've made the mistakes and learned from them so that I can pass my knowledge on to you. Make no mistake; gardening is not easy, but it is one of the most rewarding things you can do for a healthier life.

Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Very relevant topic
This book came to me at a perfect time. I've been thinking about possible growing a few things in my apartment and after reading this book I've realized it's actually not that difficult to do even in the small apartment. So I'm excited to plant my first vegetable at home and see how it goes. Wish me luck!

Urban Farming and Sustainable Living
A wide spectrum book about sustainable, urban farming. There aren't a lot of details in this book, it's pretty basic but all of it is good information. From start to finish, seeds to preserved goods, and everything in between such as watering, compost, and nutrients. A great overview of small scale farming...aka gardening. Audio Version: Matt Haynes does a good job bringing the information to life.
