Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Different Strokes is an in-depth look at what surviving, or not surviving, a stroke can mean.

For half a century, we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it's not that simple: In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are.

Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, MD, traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they've transformed - people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

The book also provided much evidence regarding recent science concerning the mind body spirit connection. It was refreshing to hear this holistic approach augmenting more mainstream medicine.
One of my greatest takeaways is that it puts recovery into the hands of both the caregiver and the survivor. The author stresses the point about how important participation is for optimum recovery.
The chapters about advocating for a loved one in a hospital were illuminating. They highlighted the need for vigilance as well as engagement with hospital staff to ensure the best treatment.
The book even provided me with an understanding some of insurance peculiarities and how to navigate them effectively.
I especially appreciated that each chapter listed essential takeaways. These bullet points enable a quick read to get the idea of the most important parts of the chapter. This is a book that can be re-read at different points of recovery to gain new insights with each reading.
While the author is compassionate, she is candid about responsibilities needed for change. The stories were also helpful and hopeful for long-term recovery.
The immensely helpful content is enhanced by the author’s own voice. Not only is it crystal clear and easy to follow but the empathy and concern contained in the book is evident in her voice.
