She’s too prim

Lilah Holcutt dislikes Constantine Moreland from the moment she meets him. He may be handsome, but he’s frivolous, rash, impulsive and, worst of all, a flirt. Now that Con’s twin brother has married Lilah’s best friend, she’s seeing way more of Con than she’d like. And when Con’s sisters are inexplicably kidnapped, Lilah’s own curiosity and stubbornness get the better of her, and she finds herself swept into Con’s investigation.

He’s indifferent to propriety

Con knows that Lilah hates him—he just wishes she weren’t so devastatingly beautiful, that he weren’t so attracted to her. Especially since they’re working closely together to solve the kidnapping, an adventure that leads them to Lilah’s peculiar childhood home, Barrow House, which sits atop an ancient fen and features an eerie maze on its grounds.

They’ll have to join together to conquer a sinister force

The more Con and Lilah uncover, the more they’re convinced that the answers lie buried deep within Barrow House—answers to a mystery darker than either of them could ever have realized.

This is the last of the series that I will be listening because the narrator, Will Thorne, will not be speaking the next book.
I started the series and was introduced to this writer because I seek books narrated by Will Thorne. The series was most enjoyable and made more so because of the narration.
The next in series will be with a different narrator. I will not be getting it. Foolish to change narrators within a series.
I will move on to another book and series narrated by Will Thorne.

Enjoyable and great narration

I loved the blend of spooky mystery and romance. Unashamedly entertaining; and the characters are so well drawn and convincing with believable motivations. The narration was also pitch perfect - very engaging, and wonderful hear female voices done so well by a man.

What fun!

I loved the story! I wish the previous 3 books were on Audible to I could listen to the whole story. Great adventure, mystery, magic, strong women, humor. There are some sex scenes in this story that might push it slightly beyond sweet. The narration was amazing! Will thorne sounds exactly like Alex Wyndham from the Rockcliff stories by Stella Riley. His amazing sexy voice & ability to do women voices well brings the story to life.

Loved it!

It started off well with lots of action; but then it got SO boring. The only interruption in its boring-ness was the cryptic oddities punctuating the plot that were either (a) just weird, or (b) not worth following its thread.

I like when fantasy books create their own worlds & new rules for realities. But this one just fell short. Half-way through & I honestly couldn't care less about the clues or the key.

And it wasn't very satisfactory as a mystery either. Clues drop, but the drama stakes aren't high enough to matter. None of it makes sense to the plot, family relationships, or the couple until Chapter 39 - 41, maybe 9 hrs in? Ugh.

I also love romance books where the couple hates each other at first & then turns passionate & grows into love. But this one didn't really do that either. Great hate-to-attraction setup; but then it just kind of fizzled into a Nancy Drew couple on a Scooby-Doo adventure. Double Ugh.

The New Age stuff was convoluted at best, though I appreciate the attempt to use it to link time/dimensions. Yet I felt it, too, fell short by staying in the "spooky" logic rather than introducing a bit of scientific logic in the mix. Without it, nothing feels anchored.

So little plot, so many words...

I usually love her books, but this one is not up to her standards at all. The story is weak, and the narrator is dreadful! He makes the women sound like a teenage boy with a frog in his throat! Finally couldn’t take anymore 1/3 of the way through:(((

Disappointing, coming from Candace Camp
