Resumen del Editor

When I first started my career, I made lots of mistakes.

Not just average mistakes, but a lot of really bad, terrible, misguided, arrogant, immature, and inexperienced mistakes. The kind you learn from immediately.

There's a saying that goes, "Experience is the best kind of teacher." I am here to tell you that experience is the worst kind of teacher. Experience as a teacher brings nothing but heartache, frustration, difficulties, shame, and embarrassment. Looking back on my career honestly and truthfully, I wish I would have avoided all of these mistakes, taking instead the wise advice of those around me, implementing the suggestions I was given over the years, and not being as stubborn. But you live and learn. Fortunately, I did figure things out, and I hope you can learn a few important lessons from my ups and downs over the years:

  • The steps necessary to fire someone with dignity and integrity
  • A complete list of the best questions to ask in any interview
  • How to spot the differences between "C" players and franchise players
  • How to handle conflict on the team
  • An easy, four-step solution for holding your team accountable
  • The easiest way to do team member reviews
  • How to fire someone without splitting the team
  • How to remove volunteers
  • Adding a new position: Yay or nay?
  • How to hire and interview effectively
  • How to take your team to greatness
  • How to create a place where on Sunday night your team is excited about Monday

We're not rewarded when we do the right thing at the wrong time. Please avoid the mistakes I made and let me guide you in the right direction, before you possibly experience the same kinds of failures I did.

Informative

Short, to the point and informative. I thought it gave good insights into hiring and performance management. This book targets the professional level more than front line, but is still relevant.

Dated and narrow in its language and vision.

There were so many points where I cringed listening to this. The language is not inclusive and it was written in 2017, not 1917. And I’m not talking about proper pronouns or things that people are still working on. I’m talking about acknowledging that women are bosses as well, people who are fat are not necessarily lazy, not everyone is a Christian. Stuff like that. I also thought the narrator was a mistake. She had enthusiasm but not skill. The information wasn’t completely useless, even though it wasn’t exactly groundbreaking. But with language that shuts out a huge percentage of the listeners/readers, you are not doing a good job of getting your point across.

Awful. Sexist, bible-thumping crap

Between the bible references and the sexist "bossman" language, I couldn't make it past the first few chapters.

If you want to be a jerk employer in a toxic environment that literally discounts people who have the gall to - gasp - ask a question about whether or not the role they're interviewing for has any room for advancement, then maybe this book is for you. If you want to create a company filled with the same jerks who made you leave every other job you ever, this fits the bill.

If, however, you want to build something *better* than every crummy, soul-sucking place you ever worked, skip this book. It's outdated and out of touch, and lacks any meaningful empathy for the people you're trying to build something great with.
