Gene Stratton-Porter (1863 - 1924) was a naturalist, photographer and author.

This novel, set in 1920s California, tells the tale of Linda Strong who shares her father’s love for the beauty of nature in California. When her parents suddenly pass away, she is left with her sister Eileen, a huge house, and much wealth. Eileen goes on a spending spree, dissipating the inheritance at an alarming pace. When Linda eventually finds out, she meets with their banker and finds a way to earn money in a manner that she enjoys. The narrative includes romance, murder, and delightful descriptions of the state’s fauna and flora.

The narrator's style was irritating to me and I didn't like the way she did the characters voices.

didn't care for the narrator's style or interpretation of the story

Really disliked the narrator. She sounded like she was smiling while she was reading at inappropriate times. Her voice of Katie was ridiculous.

Great story.

Worth while listening

While Gene Stratton Porter is one of my all-time favorite authors, this is not my favorite book. That is primarily due to racism against Japanese Americans, which was very prevalent in California at the time. I did enjoy the characters and the plot, however, as well as the insights I gained about that period of time (World War I era) in US history.

An interesting look at the social trends of the era

I’ve read all her books and love them but this one is terribly read as well as being very racist. The one good thing is that it’s good to hear how some people were thinking at the time in an honest way. I think it’s good for us to be aware of history. This is very cringy to listen to, not only because of the reader who pronounces all the plants wrong, but also because of the blatant hypocrisy. She’s fighting for women’s rights while throwing Asian or rather anyone who isn’t whites rights under a bus. Still good to look back and make sure we don’t go there again. I understand that when there is war brewing the opposing sides are not going to think highly of each other. Hopefully both sides could learn from history and historical fiction.

Oh man! I love gene stratton porter but this is her worst book! Don’t buy it!
