However, when she meets Jakari through two of her students, she knows he’s the one that will change her life. Almost love at first sight, Yendi commits to Jakari and to helping him through his issues without reciprocity. That decision has left her confused, but she’s sure about the way he has swept her off her feet.

The emotions between the two are strong from the very beginning and neither of them know how to explain it. Both dealing with heavy issues, they lean on one another for healing and solace. Jakari has a hard time with that though, because he believes Yendi deserves better. She deserves a man that is ready to love her through anything. Yendi believes he deserves her and more importantly, that she deserves him and everything he has to offer.

The push and pull gets overwhelming, despite Yendi’s devotion. She begins to question her decisions and doubts that a relationship with Jakari is feasible. Can Jakari come to grips with his issues in time to claim Yendi’s love for him? Or will he allow anger, hurt, and guilt to continue to consume him, leaving no room for the love his soul needs?

The story and situations were so relatable

I really enjoyed this book.. My feelings were all over the place but so many relatable ssituations. Good writing Monica!

Started off good, but then fizzled out

This novel was my first introduction to this author. The blurb intrigued me. I skipped over the author's introduction and dedication. The first chapter introduced Jakari Bolton. He came off as interesting and this novel started off in a way I didn't expect. I was hooked. However, by chapter three, I was exhausted. There was a 1990s rapper style entourage of family members that were either blood relations or unofficially adopted into the family. I initially thought it was just the first chapter, but by the end the only chapters were there was not a mention of at least five of Jakari's relatives was the chapter with Yendi and her mom.

The pace of the novel was inconsistent. It started off well, then lagged, sped up, then lagged again. I didn't understand the issues with Yendi's family and I don't think there was any real resolution to it. I was glad to see mental health for Black men being mentioned and utilized in this novel. Yendi should have attended therapy as well. I didn't like how Yendi choose to to confront Jakari about his behaviors with her. I wish there had been more flirtation and "playing hard to get" between them to make it more engaging for me.

The narration was okay. I think it could have been better. Both narrators seemed to have no inflection in their voices to heighten the scenes. When Yendi and her mother were arguing, the narrator sounded monotone and bored. I wanted there to be more drama with the narrators when they read the characters.

Overall, the novel was okay. I don't think I will read or listen to anything else by this author any time soon.
