Captain Lull, a Union Army Civil War Veteran, shot first with a No. 2 Smith & Wesson revolver that he had secreted behind his back. The bullet struck John in the neck, but John got off a shot of his own, a shotgun blast that broke Lull's left arm and sent his horse into the brush at the side of the road.
