These women break the stereotype of the naïve and prim grandmothers of yesteryear. The modern grandmother is aware of mainstream culture to a good degree, and can relate to her children and grandchildren in realistic ways. One thing remains the same: to be a grandmother is to shake off the burden of parenting and just enjoy the fun of interacting with the young. Milligan’s apt descriptions of mother-daughter and husband-wife relationships are especially entertaining. Pam Ward’s wry narration captures Milligan’s voice well.
