The landmark book exploring what the Bible actually says—and doesn’t say—about same-sex relationships

“This book is a game changer. Every page is brought to life by the author’s clear love for Scripture and deep, persistent faith. Matthew Vines emerges as one of my generation’s most important Christian leaders.”—Rachel Held Evans

As a young Christian man, Matthew Vines harbored the same basic hopes of many young people: to one day share his life with someone, to build a family of his own, to give and receive love. But when Vines realized he was gay, those hopes were called into question. The Bible, he’d been taught, condemned gay relationships.

Feeling the tension between his understanding of the Bible and the reality of his same-sex orientation, Vines devoted years to intensive research into what the Bible says about homosexuality. He asked questions such as:

• What was the real sin of Sodom?
• What did Paul have in mind when he wrote about same-sex relations?
• Is mandatory celibacy biblical?
• Can same-sex marriage fulfill Scripture’s vision for marriage?

Accessibly written and carefully argued, God and the Gay Christian shows readers how affirming same-sex relationships can go hand in hand with maintaining moral boundaries and upholding an orthodox Christian faith.

Going into this, I thought it would just be a rehash of the typical affirming arguments which have some teeth but ultimately aren't slam dunks. But in this Matthew takes the more nuanced approach of specifically setting a contrast not between the semantics and same-sex sexual relations but instead between what was approved of/disapproved of at that time and the long-term, monoganous, covenental relationships he envisions for modern-day gay people. On this footing he is able to make a remarkably strong case. The chapter comparing to the prohibitions on usury in particular was a stand-out for me, and I appreciate his view that guardrails are necessary, as I share that concern and opposition to forms of theology that tend to disregard things they don't like. And should it matter, yes I'm gay and discerning Christianity.

Thoroughly compelling argument for an affirming stance with conservative theology

I remember getting the first copy of God and the Gay Christian, ordering it online and waiting for it to arrive, having to keep it a secret that I was even reading a book such as it.

Years later I am joyfully and loudly listening to the expanded addition and in awe of the clarity, depth, and care Matthew has for the bible, the church, and for God.

The amount of research that is compiled into this book is breath taking and the care for its delivery of biblical truth is refreshing.

This is a great read for ALL christians who claim Jesus as their Lord and savior. It is also fantastic for anyone exploring faith as a member of the lgbtq+ community or trying to better understand how they too fit inside Gods kingdom.

Thank you Matthew for your care, intentionality, leadership, wisdom, and boldness in proclaiming biblical truth in a time that can be dark and uncertain for so many people.

So what are you waiting for? If you read my whole review then I know you should be reading this book and sharing it with a friend!
