Acerca de esta escucha
Miriam Manderson is an exceptional woman with a remarkable trial to triumph story to tell, about how she contributes to the mere 0.2 percent of headteachers of Black African heritage within the United Kingdom. Miriam grew up in the concrete jungle of the notorious Stonebridge estate, to Ghanaian parents. Overcoming institutional racism, sexism and postnatal depression, From Hood to Headship is an intriguing tale about one teacher’s inspiring journey to overcome her battles as a new mother and rise above a failed school observation to become a headteacher.
Miriam unearths the terrain of challenges that Black headteachers are confronted with daily. She is truly an inspiration as, despite the battles in the pursuit of her career, Mrs Manderson remained optimistic, with a dynamic determination that allowed her to surpass the stereotypical expectations of her peers to still come out on top, with the support of her loving husband and family. This is an enriching book to encourage individuals worldwide to never give up on their career dreams because of their cultural heritage, and a call for more Black leadership representation within the British educational sector.

Teachers show up in different forms and in many chapters of a child’s life. Teaching is literacy and numeracy, but most importantly, it’s showing up with your whole heart. It’s walking kids - and yourself - through the hardest conversations about trauma, loss, grief, racism, or violence. As we work to piece together our education system in the fallout from the global pandemic, the focus must be on the teachers. If the people in charge - those teachers - aren’t OK, the students don’t stand a chance.

We're in the middle of an epidemic of stress and anxiety. Average life expectancy in the US is down. At work, less than sixteen percent of us are fully engaged. In many high-stress jobs such as distribution centers, emergency room nursing, and teaching, incidences of PTSD are higher than veterans returning from war zones. We are getting something terribly wrong. Our workplaces fail utterly to provide for or capitalize on one of our most basic human needs: our need for love.
