Perfect

I go through Books like crazy. This one stays with you and in my opinion is perfect. It has everything I hope for as well as so many things unexpected. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel and this author is now on my top authors list.
The narration was outstanding.

solidly okay

This was an engaging and fun read with interesting world building, but the writing left something to be desired.

A very enjoyable break from traditional fantasy.

Finally, someone sparked my imagination and delivered a creative, engaging and thoughtful story. It took a bit to adjust to the narrators style but gradually it works quite well with whole.

Looking forward to the next book!

Great fantasy, coherent story and convincing cast

This is the first book I listened to by Robert Jackson Bennett, and I was pleasantly surprised. Like any good fantasy novel, once you accept the basic premises everything clicks together and makes sense. I found the logic of the “magic” of scriving does not break, and the plot is true to it too. I liked the main characters (Sancia in particular, of course,...), as they were convincing and relatable, while having fully developed personalities; I also liked that these personalities are exposed gradually as part of the story. The plot line is captivating and mostly unpredictable. Listening while driving, I often didn’t want to pause when reaching my destination… I disagree with the criticism of the narrator – I think she did a great job and kept the story alive and interesting. I can hardly wait to listen to the rest of the series as well as other books by this author.

Iat times it forced the issue of character development, but still was an entertaining listen.

I enjoyed what I heard

Until the cursing started - since that was so early in the book, I knew there would be a lot more of it. I wish authors would put decent warnings on their content! Something like "full of magic, adventure, sex and cussing good fun." Then people like me would snicker and move on without the hassle of a review & seeking out the return process.

Brilliant!

It took some time to get into, but once I did, I was hooked for life! Very interesting concept, fun characters, and interesting story. And I actually think the TINY bit of romance added some weight and risk at the end. Very well done.

Fantasy/Italian mafia story

If you love both of those genres this is for you. Loved the key. Loved the Magic. Lots of drama and crime. I'm not so hot on Italian mafia stories so I'm only giving this 4 stars.

Best book ever recommended to me.

This was recommended to me by a colleague at where I work. I listened to the author’s words via Audible, Read them via my Kindle and I must say I can’t wait to read this series all the way to the end. 5 stars across the board!!

Fun story hampered by sub-par narration

I really want to like this series, but having finished this first audiobook and starting the second one, I almost feel I have to leave the audiobook and just read the series in print because the narration is just that bad. The way the book is read feels like an elementary teacher reading to a class of wide eyed students, and every character comes off snooty and sarcastic. It’s very nearly unbearable for me, and I’m honestly shocked to see overwhelmingly positive reviews here.
