The attention to detail impresses and delights. To craft a world and fill it with so many different characters with such varied quirks and personalities, then weave these things together in such a way that leaves one on the edge of their seat so often. Reading this put me in suspense, made me laugh, frustrated me to no end, and left me in awe. It is a tragedy and a triumph in equal measure as the voices of reason are removed, and the depths of depravity behind a mans ambition are revealed.

Simply Addicting

Graham McNeil does a phenomenal job in both characters and description. It would’ve been easy to have made the Space Marines simple, 1 Dimensional super soldiers who’s only personality is kicking Xenos Ass and instead have the Primarchs take center stage. Yet he makes every single character have personality. I’m enthralled with Horus just as I am with Garviel Loken. Even the mortal, non-enhanced characters are both well written and intriguing.

He also paints an incredible portrait when it comes to description. The way he describes the setting and action allows the reader to truly see what is happening in their minds eye. Usually when reading I have a good idea of what is happening in a story. But the writing in this book is exceptional and truly in a league of its own.

Finally, Toby Longworth does a phenomenal job as narrator. I don’t know how familiar he is with the setting but regardless he truly is able to bring the world and characters to life with his narration. Despite him being the only voice he manages to make every character unique. His voice is both calming yet powerful. I truly hope to see him return for future installments.

In conclusion if this book is a sign of things to come for the series I simply can not wait to see what else is in store. If you are a fan of Warhammer 30/40k this book is a MUST READ! Even if you are unfamiliar with the setting I would still recommend it. However it may be helpful to watch some lore videos or go on a wiki if you’re unfamiliar with something. The universe is quite big and can be intimidating to those who are unfamiliar with the setting. That said however this book is not only a fantastic introduction for for newcomers but a must read for fans of the series. This book and series as a whole is truly a breathtaking look into the events of The Horus Heresy and is an insightful look into the Downfall and Tragedy of Horus Lupercal and his Luna Wolves and how The Imperium and Mankind would forever be changed by the events that transpire in this series.

The plot and performance of this installment remain incredible as always, but the author’s prose and portrayal of women leaves a bit to be desired (particularly the close repetition of words that mires his descriptions). Nonetheless, Toby’s reading saves

The story continues strong.

Listening how the Luna Wolves sealed the fate of Billions to eternal damnation was so riveting. They did not do it out of Greed or Malice but of desperation to save their Warmaster and father. The table is set and pieces are starting to move.

An amazing performance for a great story!

Absolutely captivating dive into the corruption of the Astartes legions of the Great Crusade. Watching Horus fall into madness is a thing of horrible beauty!

im thouroughly suprised at how thoughtful this series is, despite the motto of the Warhammer 40k universe. Abnett set up the astartes as suprisingly relatable and Mcneill follows it up with focused intensity.

Longworth is brilliant as always, and its a lot of fun to hear the voices of each character shift and change as he becomes more familiar with them, hes a class act.

if you're into warhammer and love the astartes, this series seems to be a must-read.

Decent

The beginning is ugh. The end is better. I don't like some of the character motivations/actions, especially in the beginning. The writing can be needlessly flourishy. The end is a bit more exciting.
