An introduction to EMDR, a proven trauma therapy with the power to heal, cowritten by a world-renowned therapist and a patient who experienced transformative relief through EMDR therapy.

Trauma is a part of life.

You or someone you care about has probably experienced trauma, whether “big-T” trauma, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse or the more common but no less significant “little-t” trauma that can result from divorce, job loss, painful childhood experiences, or any situation where you felt worthless, afraid, or powerless. Untreated trauma can lead to long lasting effects such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and difficulties maintaining intimate relationships.

But the good news is that we can heal—and it doesn’t have to take a lifetime. EMDR (which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a unique type of psychotherapy proven to help people recover from trauma and improve the quality of their lives.

Cowritten by a patient who experienced transformative relief from trauma through EMDR therapy, and a world-renowned psychologist who explains exactly how and why EMDR works, Every Memory Deserves Respect provides clear information while offering inspiration and hope.

Through compelling science and personal stories we learn how trauma is stored in the brain and body, continuing to cause pain and suffering, and how EMDR frees us by repatterning our thinking and emotional reactions. It explains why talk therapy has only a limited impact on trauma recovery, describes what to expect from gentle and targeted EMDR therapy, and offers guidance on how to find a therapist who is just right for you.

This is a book that anyone can read to better understand how life’s experiences, which we store as memories, have a profound effect on how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. Michael Baldwin shares his very personal story and the way his EMDR therapy released him from limiting beliefs about himself so he could find freedom from specific phobias and live his life more fully. Dr. Deborah Korn does an amazing job of helping readers or listeners understand how EMDR works, why it works, and what’s involved in the treatment. I’m a psychologist and I knew quite a bit about EMDR, however, this book deepened my understanding and respect for this powerful approach to healing. This opened my eyes to so much more than I could even begin to realize. I admire those who are willing to share their own personal stories for the sake of helping others

The voices are perfect… and they convey the subject matter most effectively. Michael’s story, although tough, is dealt with grace and empathy. Debbie teaches the listener what trauma is, the telltale signs of hidden trauma… and most importantly, what the treatment, EMDR, is, how it is administered, and how it heals. This book will change your life.

If you’re interested in, thinking about it even hesitant to try EMDR therapy this book is for you! There’s very little trigger context, and they warn you before reading it. They go through all stages, and really give all the information you need to makes an informed decision if it’s right for you. It also gives resources on how to find a good EMDR therapist. Following along with the physical copy of the book helped me with the visuals etc…

Great read for therapists and clients alike
