Wow! Best yet!

This narrator is unbelievably versatile and makes the story so authentic with his accent and changeable voice. I've tried reading these books in print but Mark Hammer makes it much more real!

Burke can be wordy but those extra words are always well said and beautiful.

Thank you, Mr Burke for a wonderful character and a great series...

Another well told story by James Lee Burke. Mark Hammer’s narration was excellent as Always. There is a lot of depth to Mr Burke’s writing. The story was very interesting and will keep you guessing what will happen next. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

not the best so far in the series.

There seemed to be a lot of convenient events keeping Dave on the trail in this book. Still had me carrying my phone into the house from the car with the audible app still playing.

Review Dixie City Jam

James Lee Burke's Dave Roubicheaux is a very complicated hero, maybe too complicated within his graphically violent realistic narrative. Roubicheaux is also perhaps too virtuous---even though he is shown to have faults as a recovering alcoholic, the faults are made to be virtuously overcome. And Roubicheaux seems to be a Southern liberal cop/detective, which is another odd take on the reality of the South; it reminds me of the incongruity of the late actor Marlon Brando who looked and acted like a prize fighter but was a bleeding heart liberal who talked in violent free verse. Oh, and Roubicheaux is also a college grad. Burke is obviously fascinated with graphic violence and he has a great ear for violent-talking men, it's poetic really, far better than Hemingway, but the unremitting violence of his stories start making the reader/listener wish for a little better view of the world. Bottom line: I like Burke's genius ear, but the bleakness and endless graphic violence in every Roubicheaux book, which Burke seems to enjoy just a bit too much, is depressing.

If your a fan this is another gem. Mark Hammer is great makes you feel like your right there in New Orleans

Dave against the Neo-Nazis

When Dave Robicheaux made the mistake of letting people know he had an idea as to where a World War Two U-boat sunk in the Caribbean might be found, suddenly he has too many people wanting him to lead them to it, including a man calling himself Will Buchalter. With informants dying on him left and right and apparently Bootsie intending to enter the alcoholic state he's fought so hard to put behind him, Dave doesn't know quite whom to trust--and with reason.

Action packed as usual. Although I realized in this one I was perhaps quicker on the uptake and even less trusting than Dave himself, as I had the accomplice pegged pretty quickly on while Dave was still trying to sort out his feelings toward the individual.

Excellent reading of this dialect filled book.
