The #1 New York Times bestselling author of World War Z is back with “the Bigfoot thriller you didn’t know you needed in your life, and one of the greatest horror novels I’ve ever read” (Blake Crouch, author of Dark Matter and Recursion).

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined . . . until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing—and too earth-shattering in its implications—to be forgotten. In these pages, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it. Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and, inevitably, of savagery and death.

Yet it is also far more than that.

Because if what Kate Holland saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us—and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity.

Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it—and like none you’ve ever read before.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“There’s a bowstring undercurrent running through the whole of Max Brooks’s newest that’s liable to snap a reader in half. Characters so real you could name them from your own life, even as you call for them to run for cover. Max Brooks has written the next great epistolary novel. Devolution is phenomenal.”—Josh Malerman, New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box and Malorie

“A masterful blend of laugh-out-loud social satire and stuff-your-fist-in-your-mouth horror. One elevates the other, making the book, and its message, all the more relevant.”—David Sedaris, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Calypso

“Another triumph from Max Brooks! First zombies. Now Bigfoot. I can’t wait until he turns every monster from childhood into an intelligent, entertaining page-turner.”—Stephen Chbosky, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Imaginary Friend and The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Devolution is spellbinding. It is a horror story about how anyone, especially those who think they are above it, can slowly devolve into primal, instinctual behavior. I was gripped from the first page to the last!"—Les Stroud, creator of Survivorman, filmmaker, and author

“I wish we could elevate the national dialogue on public safety to a level of tone and focus that Max Brooks has demonstrated for all of us.”—Tom Ridge, former governor of Pennsylvania and first secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

“Both a bloody good read and a bloody, good read. You’ll never look at a bamboo stake the same way again.”Andrew Hunter Murray, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Last Day

“Unputdownable . . . will have you gripped to the last thrilling page.”—John Marrs, bestselling author of The One

“It’s terrifying. Brooks is not only dealing with the end of humanity; he’s also showing us our further course toward a new, ineluctable, absolute brutality.”BookPage (starred review)

“With stellar worldbuilding, a claustrophobic atmosphere, an inclusive and fascinating cast of characters, and plenty of bloody action, this inventive story will keep readers’ heart rates high.”Library Journal (starred review)

“Brooks creates vivid landscapes and has a gift for shifting focus in an instant, turning lovely nature scenes suddenly menacing. Brooks packs his plot with action, information, and atmosphere, and captures both the foibles and the heroism of his characters.”Publishers Weekly

Featured Article: Book vs. Movie—Jurassic Park

Michael Crichton's 1990 sci-fi best seller became a cultural phenomenon with Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster film adaptation. But what are the key differences between the novel and the movie? One of the most beloved sci-fi adventure films ever made, Spielberg's juggernaut Jurassic Park is a feat of animatronic work, impeccable casting, and wildly perfect pacing. No less incredible, still, is the novel on which it's based, Crichton's masterpiece. But just how similar are the two? If you're looking for the major differences between Jurassic Park the book and the movie, we've got you covered.

I used to laugh at Sasquatch...
"We’ve all heard the tales of mysterious creatures that people have speculated to be real. From Bigfoot to the Loch Ness Monster, these tales rarely scared anyone, just provided some fun atmosphere. With Devolution, Max Brooks, the best-selling author of World War Z, is bringing some horrifying heat. This docu-style story was a treat to listen to and enjoy, especially as we’re all a little trapped inside. Max Brooks has spun together a very unique plot from a long-told myth, and it’s everything a horror fan can hope for. This is not the Sasquatch or Bigfoot we learned about at the campfire. This beast is out for blood."—Nicole R., Audible Editor

I'm a huge Max Brooks fan and stayed on the fence forever about this book. Some said "the characters aren't developed". Others said "it takes forever for anything to happen". Lots of people said "the narrator is horrible". All of these are the complaints you might hear from someone too pretentious to enjoy a good slasher movie. That's what this book is, a slasher movie. In that context it deserves it's great reviews.

Do you like movies like 30 Days of Night, Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead, Scream, House on Haunted Hill, Alien, The Thing, It, or Us? If you do, you'll like this book. If you're unsure let me run you through the broad plot strokes for the genre.

You're introduced to your cast during peace time. Just a brief look at each characters, we didn't come to see a soap opera. These characters will range from likable to unlikable. If you seriously need to know a person entire backstory to feel sorry for them when they're torn to pieces, I feel sorry for you. Some are so gruesome I feel sorry for the unlikable characters.

Something goes wrong. This is either because of an unlikable character's choices, bad luck, or a combination. Now we're all locked in for the ride.

The first hints of the monster in the shadows. A smell, a sight. Whatever it was it was likely just the imagination. For those complaining it takes forever to get to this point I clocked it at less than two and a half hours. If you compare that to the length of a slasher plot, that's about par.

Less then half way through the story and our cast is in the thick of it. So don't worry, there's plenty of sasquatch.

Some of you might still be on the fence about this book because of all the complaints about the narrator. Let me ask you, do you like the main characters from movies like Scream, Scary Movie, or House on Haunted Hill? The weak female protagonist, who in crisis finds strength. I love Archer and Arrested Development, but I'll admit I didn't think I would be able to sink into the book with Judy Greer narrating. I was wrong. It did throw me off at first, but when the tension started rising she fit the role well. I recommend you give her more of a chance then some of these people.

Some people can't seem to get over Max Brooks not writing a World War Z clone. I think he wrote this so we don't have another World War Z. That masterpiece will forever be tarnished by Hollywood. This book can and hopefully will be easily translated into a movie. This is Max Brooks's masterful attempt at making something Hollywood can't mess up. I hope he's succeeded and I hope you enjoy this amazing modern horror story.

NEGATIVE REVIEWS CAN BE MISLEADING

The story is well written and it is obvious the author did a lot of research into alleged sightings and bigfoot behavior. The cast of narrators did a great job telling the story. There is some violence in the book, but it is not a typical bigfoot horror story full of blood and gore.

I was on the fence about buying the book until I heard the author being interviewed on the Sasquatch Chronicles podcast. There was only one thing I would remark upon. When the subject of the Patterson-Gimlin film came up it was interesting that the next thing talked about was a person with a different encounter who passed a lie detector test. While not well known, Roger Patterson also passed a lie detector test, given to him in 1968. It was setup by National Wildlife Magazine as condition that he pass the polygraph test before a story about his film would be run in their magazine. He passed the test and the story ran in the April 1968 edition of the magazine.

I would love to see this book turned into a movie!!

Loved every minute of it. Does not go where I expected it to go. Well done.

I’m only writing a review because I nearly skipped this book after reading a few negative ones. The writing is wonderful and the performance is top notch.

Fantastic.
