Why we think it's Essential: Barbara Rosenblat's expert performance as Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is imaginative, witty, and great fun. Rosenblat has tremendous vocal range, capturing many characters of different genders and ethnicities. This rich and lively story is the first in Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series, and I can't wait to listen to the rest of them. — Diana Dapito

Resumen del Editor

Amelia Peabody inherited two things from her father: a considerable fortune and an unbendable will. The first allowed her to indulge in her life's passion. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all.

Great fun

The Amelia Peabody series of books are witty, intelligent, fun, and tongue-in-cheek. Barbara Rosenblat makes them even more engaging with her wide range of voices and marvelous performance. This is a must-hear.

Fabulously entertaining!

Barbara Rosenblatt does a wonderful job narrating the part of Amelia Peabody. The book is somewhat predictable, but the story is SO wonderful and fun it pulls you along through the end. I also loved the characters' full development especially that of Amelia. A great listen!

I am obviously part of a minority...

...in that I did not care for this book. I would not be finishing it if it were not required reading for my book club. I started out with the book as an ebook, realized I would never be able to finish it, and opted for an audible version. I have never been so irritated by a narrator. Why does Barbara Rosenblat take these great gulps of air every few sentences? I never hear other narrators do this. Perhaps she has asthma? Is a heavy smoker? In any event, I find it very unprofessional and highly distracting. And I realize that my ill humor makes me sound like Amelia Peabody herself, who is, in my opinion, unnecessarily arrogant and full of herself. Sorry - I'll content myself being a member of a minority, and pass on the rest of this series, plus any book narrated by Barbara Rosenblat.

WoW

I started listening to Amelia Peabody's adventures over 10 years ago and this is the first time I was able to listen to the first book in the series. I just loved it, such vivid detail without being the least bit boring! A great story line and what an adventure. I can really "see" these characters as I listen. Wonderful book.

Interesting

I did enjoy this novel even though it was a bit different. The characters are slightly type cast and the mystery element was very unbelievable but it was a fun, fluffy read.

I've never had this much fun listening to a book!

Would you listen to Crocodile on the Sandbank again? Why?

Absolutely, this book had a great story and the narrator is fantastic!

What other book might you compare Crocodile on the Sandbank to and why?

I don't know if this book is comparable to any other I've ever read. It was a great mystery but at the same time it was funny.

Which scene was your favorite?

It's hard to say because I loved every bit of it. I even restarted the book and plugged it into the car audio so that my husband could enjoy it with me as we went on a road trip!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes but it would give away part of the conclusion so I can't tell you

Any additional comments?

Elizabeth Peters is a great writer! I plan on reading the entire series!

I highly recommend this book and series

This is the first book in a remarkable series. Amelia Peabody, a newly wealthy spinster, is off to Egypt, after a little drama from her family after the death of her father. In my opinion, she is one of the most amazing characters in literature. She is smart, brave funny and heroic. She meets a young lady while on her trip and they become friends as they explore the mysteries of Egypt. They meet two brothers at a museum. One is a disshelved rascal and the other his charming younger brother. Their activities create opportunities for them to interact with Amelia on a regular basis. Amelia and the rascal are always arguing and he is so rude to her. Her young female friend and the rascal's brother, on the other hand, are getting along like a house afire. The problem is that a mummy keeps plaguing them with its scary presence. This is an amazing series that grows and grows. There are over twenty books and I never got bored. I highly recommend you begin with Crocodile on a Sandbank and go forward. I think you will enjoy it immensely.

This is the first Miss Peabody

There have been many reviews of this work. I have listened to all of the Emerson's adventures. They are funny, and accurate. After all how many novels about archeologist have been written by a woman with a Doctorate in Archeology. When Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Mertz died I grieved at her death as if I had know her personally. After all the audiobooks, and kindle books, and paperback books read over twenty years I think all of her faithful readers felt her loss personally. So I am listening to The Crocodile on the Sandbank again. It is worth reading for the Egyptian poem that the name refers to.
