I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one! It's a refreshingly good story that kept my interest. The characters are engaging and likable. I didn't want it to end. The author portrays each of them well. She isn't over-the-top in her portrayal of them as some readers tend to be. I highly recommend this audio book!

We listened to this on a road trip and throughly enjoyed the story and its characters.  This story takes place in the late 1800's and tells of a young girl of mixed race and the challenges and successes she experienced. It includes many other characters and locations that are told in a way that makes you feel you are right there with them.  

Having the author narrate the book assures that the characters are read as intended.  Can't wait to read the next book in the series to see what happens for Cress.

I really enjoyed the reading by the author. The different voices really stood out. The story itself gave a glimpse into a world that would be so difficult to live in. It was done in a manner that did not sugar coat but was still appropriate for young adults.
