Dr. Sheila Tao is a professor of psychology, an expert in human behavior with her own hidden past. But she's not the only one keeping secrets. When Sheila began an affair with her sexy graduate assistant Ethan Wolfe, she knew she was playing with fire. Consumed by lust when they were together, she was riddled with guilt when they were apart. Now she's finally engaged to a good man, and it's time to end the dangerous liaison. But Ethan has something different in mind. He intends to make her pay for rejecting him.

As Sheila attempts to counter Ethan's increasingly threatening moves, he schemes to reveal her darkest, most intimate secrets by destroying her prestigious career...and then her. Caught in a terrifying cat-and-mouse game, Sheila must fight for her life and free herself from the ex-lover whom she couldn't resist - who is now the manipulative monster who won't let her go.

This is an interesting plot and could have been a really good listen, but something just never clicked. There was basically ZERO chemistry between the protagonist and her fiancé. He was never described as anyone who you would feel attraction for. He was called “big” & “fat” & “old” throughout the book. While I appreciate the inclusion of a “plus sized” live interest, his size was used as a playground tease instead of a strong protector. The lack of chemistry may have been the narration, which made him sound like a (bad) character from “Dallas” (the TV show). There was nothing about his character that made me believe Sheila would fall for him. Perhaps reading this book would have been better.

Other narration issues include the narrator sounding like she had a mouth full of saliva.

Overall, good story, but not a great listening experience!

The narrator makes all the difference. Unfortunately, this one needed a different narrator!

Why would someone trust this voice actor with their work?? She either had dentures that were slipping or she was wearing a retainer, or maybe she was smashed while she read… but the disgusting slurring of every s or sh or tion was grossing me out!! She literally stumbled over words at times! Also, she made Sheila sound like a whiny loser. I was going to listen to ‘freak’ but I saw it was the same annoying narrator and I will happily pass!

Ms Hillier was no less annoying when she made her characters do ridiculous things! Sheila carelessly takes a drink from a total stranger and ‘surprise’ he drugged her! A seasoned cop turned PI turns his back on a suspect, and when she slips and divulges info only the killer could know… he continues to turn his back on her AND alerts her that she slipped up by asking her a stupid question… while turning his back on her🤷🏻‍♀️

I wanted to kill this narrator…

I must have hyped this book up too much in my head. The story promised a plot twist and just pooped the bed in the end. Just really another soulless lifetime movie plot that I regret spending 20 dollars on. There was a notable amount of homophobic remarks and racist tropes in here that I thought would be important to the plot. They were not. If you really want to read this book, do yourself a favor and just skip to the last 4 chapters the whole rest of the book hardly mattered and it felt like I read 11 hours of rehashed filler.

Lifetime Movie as a Book

Very hard time listening to this woman. I won’t listen to the second in this series because of that alone. I’m sorry. She just sounded like a an old white lady slurring and mispronouncing some words while trying to picture an accomplished professional Asian American woman. Couldn’t get past it. Sorry

The narrator

kinda droned on for longer than it needed to.. but it wasn't terrible. Had a couple nice twists.

it was okay
