Remy Pendergast and his royal vampire companions face an enemy that is terrifyingly close to home in book two of Rin Chupeco’s queer, bloody Gothic epic fantasy series for fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.

Remy Pendergast, vampire hunter, and his unexpected companions, royal vampires Lord Zidan Malekh and Lady Xiaodan Song, are on the road through the kingdom of Aluria again after a hard-won first battle against the formidable Night Empress, who threatens to undo a fragile peace between humans and vampires. Xiaodan is severely injured and has lost her powers to vanquish the enemy’s new superbreed of vampire, but if the trio can make it to Fata Morgana, the seat of Malehk’s court—dubbed “the Court of Wanderers”—there is hope of nursing her back to health and restoring them.

Enroute to the Third Court, Remy crosses paths with his father, the arrogant, oftentimes cruel Lord of Valenbonne. He also begins to suffer strange dreams of the Night Empress, whom he has long suspected to be Ligaya Pendergast, his own mother. As his family history unfolds during these episodes, which are too realistic to be coincidence, he realizes that she is no ordinary vampire—and that he may end up having to choose between the respective legacies of his parents.

Posing as Malek and Xiaodan’s human familiar, Remy contends with Aluria’s intimidating vampire courts and a series of gruesome murders with their help—and more, as the three navigate their relationship. But those feelings and even their extraordinary collective strength will be put to the test as each of them unleashes new powers in combat at what may be the ultimate cost.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Spencer is a superb storyteller. He keeps the plot moving. His skill at distinguishing characters is a solid plus for listeners as the political intrigue becomes more and more complicated and Remy unravels his family’s secrets. Spencer also maintains the intensity of the combat scenes and murder."
Beautiful Character Development • Satisfying Conclusion • Quieter Gentler Tone • Engaging Chemistry

I wished for a little more action and a tweak for more descriptions of bed scenes because they could be so delicious. This book forcused more on Mal and Remi but it just always seemed uncomfortable with the 2 men being sexual. Ths descriptions of Xiodan were always so loving but it both books described Mal with such lack luster passion or like an after thought.

I absolutely did not believe Duke Valenbornes change in character though I did believe his "completion".

Other than that I found myself satisfied. Those 3 points I have did not kill my enjoyment of the second book. Honestly it gave it more of a believable variance which is why I give it a STRONG 4. Very close to exactly what I want in a book just feels like it needs one more little push.

I am assuming there will be a book 3. Mainly so I can get a cover with Xiodan on the front.

A wonderful but slower 2nd book

This story was great and captured my attention throughout. I love the humor! The author is talented for making banter between each character. It’s witty, fun, humorous, and a great story. There isn’t fluff, so the length is perfect size. I enjoyed the battles a bit more in the first one and the first one made me more attached to the characters. Overall great book. I will buy a physical copy to add to my trophy case which I only do if I plan to reread. I do recommend this book series.
