Constance Verity Saves my world - yet again

I've said it before - and I'll probably say it again when the next one comes out - I love A. Lee Martinez's books. And I especially love the Constance Verity series.

I just finished "Constance Verity Saves The World" and I was worried that he wouldn't be able to keep up the fantastic story he'd started in "The Last Adventure Of Constance Verity". I am happy to report that I should not have worried. Connie, once again, has saved the day for me and everyone else on the planet.

Dealing with new problems, old enemies, and the possible loss of the magic spell she's been living with her whole life makes things... interesting for Connie and her friends. But mostly Connie.

I love the world that Martinez has made for this. It's - and this is not a knock in any way - like the crazy, self-aware "super scientist" aspect of The Venture Brothers in the early seasons. And It's great. He takes the absurdity of super scientists, evil villains, magicians and aliens and makes them all an integral part of the universe that makes it fun without being ridiculous.

Not his best work

I love every A Lee Martinez book I've read, so the pacing on this one was a surprise. the humor I've become accustomed to was lacking for the majority of the book.

As good as the first book

In general, I find sequels disappointing, particularly when the book they follow relied on some kind of gimmick. I was concerned that a second Constance Verity book would suffer from the fact that so many "epic hero" stereotypes had already been mined by the first book, and was pleasantly surprised that Martinez was able to continue the entertaining action without feeling like he was digging for scraps.

A. Lee Martinez Does It Again

I read and listen to books as a diversion to every day life. This author takes you out of the dreary and into a different dimension or galaxy, looking at things from a unique perspective. I love all books A. Lee Martinez. Cynthia Farrell is an excellent narrator.

Tons of fun!

Great follow up to the original! Turns tropes upside down with style! Always a pleasure to get to know Lee's characters, who are never as simple as they appear on first glance.

Another fun offering in this series. It's a stand alone novel, so you don't really have to read them in order.
Recommended.

Connie, grow up!

Narrator was more of the same--I really like Tia's voice, and Larry was a nice difference, but most others (especially the men) sound exactly the same to me. She did get to try out more accents this time though, and I really enjoy those.

I have to admit found this book a somewhat annoying and disappointing. I enjoyed the throwaway sentences and the snark, I loved Tia and her relationship with Hiro is amusing, but I find Connie increasingly annoying, especially how she treats her friends and loved ones. The agonizing relationship between her and Byron seemed like a constant broken record and I kept wanting to yell at her to get over herself. I imagine that might be what the author was going for, in which case it was very effectively executed, but just isn't my cup of tea.

I mean, WHY do protagonists NEVER just TALK to each other about IMPORTANT things like frickin' ADULTS??? I feel like I adult my feelings very well, thank you. I feel like a lot of people I know also adult their feelings very well, thank you. Why are there so few characters in books who adult their feelings???

I'm really hoping that those rehashed problems can be left behind for book three, and let the adventurers just have some fun. The ending did give some hope that the internal drama might be, if not solved, at least graduated to a new level of problems. Fingers crossed!

Good story that wasn't written for me ...

...and that's just fine. Overall okay, great performances, it's just that I don't think I was the target audience. I expected to see a new twist in Connie's powers ... and I did. But I had to wade through a lot of story that was mostly about the ins and outs of dating that didn't always ring true to my ears. Sometimes it spoke to my world. sometimes I found some of the characters whiney. and sometimes their deliberately obtuse reactions were annoying. Which is all to say that even if it wasn't always like my experiences, I'm sure it was on point for other readers. And that's why it 4 stars: theorizing was just fine, it's just that I thought it would go one direction based on the first installment, but instead I got kind of a "Real World: Verity Dimension" story ... and I gave up watching those after the first three seasons EONS ago. Hpwever, this is but one story, Martinez must follow his muse down the path as he is want to do, and he need not write for a particular reader: he wanted to develop these characters and he did so. Its just that I got on the wrong ride based on what I understood of the characters. No harm done. It's not likely I'll pay to read about the weddings, first child and daycare exploits of those with a cosmic leaning towards constant adventure. I'm sure others will, though, so ... now I must be a lot more wary regarding this series. I need an ESCAPE, not a REMINDER of everyday stuff. Meh.
