Acerca de esta escucha

In a sharp, witty, and definitive memoir like no other, iconic trailblazer and legendary journalist Connie Chung delves into her storied career as the first Asian woman to break into an overwhelmingly white, male-dominated television news industry.

Connie Chung is a pioneer. In 1969 at the age of 23, this once-shy daughter of Chinese parents took her first job at a local TV station in her hometown of Washington, D.C. and soon thereafter began working at CBS news as a correspondent. Profoundly influenced by her family’s cultural traditions, yet growing up completely Americanized in the United States, Chung describes her career as an Asian woman in a white male-centered world. Overt sexism was a way of life, but Chung was tenacious in her pursuit of stories–battling rival reporters to secure scoops that ranged from interviewing Magic Johnson to covering the Watergate scandal–and quickly became a household name. She made history when she achieved her dream of being the first woman to co-anchor the CBS Evening News and the first Asian to anchor any news program in the U.S.

Chung pulls no punches as she provides a behind-the-scenes tour of her singular life. From showdowns with powerful men in and out of the newsroom to the stories behind some of her career-defining reporting and the unwavering support of her husband, Maury Povich, nothing is off-limits–good, bad, or ugly. So be sure to tune in for an irreverent and inspiring exclusive: this is CONNIE like you’ve never seen her before.

OUTSTANDING MEMOIRE!

There is so much to love about this book because it's well written and engrossing. I was pleasantly surprised by Connie's transparency. I loved the cultural details of her parents in China and how they relocated to the U.S.. Connie's legacy is well documented, poignant. and captivating. So much of her personal life is revealed. She's faced bigotry, sexism, betrayal, and misogyny while climbing to the top in her profession. I have even more admiration after reading this. It's one of the best memoirs that I've read this year.

Sincere telling of the good and the bad

Chung comes across as both humble and proud; still questioning herself about decisions she made and holding herself accountable but also not shrinking from calling out the sexism and racism she encountered. It’s always better when the author is the narrator of an autobiography.

A Pioneering Woman Journalism

I remember and admired Connie Chung as a journalist. Her memoir reminds me of the difficulties women faced entering the work force in my generation. As a Chinese woman, her challenges were doubly difficult. Chung's honest reflections and wry sense of humor make this an interesting and entertaining memoir. True to form, her memoir is unique, organised and presented with well-placed asides and non-traditional structure. Her comments about Dan Rather are interesting too. I haven't read any memoir that has anything good to say about him. I highly recommend the audio version of this book with Chung's strong, mesmerising voice narrating her story.

Authenticity

I liked Connie’s respect for others in her field. This wasn’t an attack book
Which I found refreshing.

A beautiful story.

Connie shares not just her professional life but also her struggles growing up Chinese in a country not so welcoming. Her tenacity as a news anchor in a white male dominated field is admirable. Then her personal life with Maury and finally becoming a mom - perhaps the role she values the most.

Fascinating…

A wonderful examination of network news behind the scenes, especially the sometimes contentious struggles between the people involved.
I am sure the author glosses over many situations that were truly unpleasant. She gets credit for not giving up, and always being cool under pressure.

Superb.

Wish Connie's gold standard for news reporting on the big networks in her day was that of today's anchors & reporters. As she says in this memoir, report the honest story & facts & let the viewers decide. Something the Megan Kelleys of today should take to heart. No agenda, just report.
