I did enjoyed it

It was a different type of book for me and I enjoyed it. I did however found the ending was rushed without the suspense of the beginning. The narrator has a great range of characters and a relaxing voice. He can really set a scene with just sound of his voice

Had Potental Didn't Deliver

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Actually this book was for me. It had potential, but it was like a rough copy that needed a lot of work. As it is it is not really for any body other than a person reviewing an unfinished draft.

What was most disappointing about Jameel Shabazz’s story?

The story was unique but parts were erroneous and not realistic. For example the book kept referring to giving Joseph his "psychotic meds". It's anti-psychotic meds or psychotropic meds. NOT PSYCHOTIC MEDS. I'm a retired psych nurse and this got to me like an annoying buzzing mosquito.

Also A very powerful cabal or fraternity of pedophiles with members world wide in high powerful positions were blackmailing and threatening the defense attorney, prosecutor, other legal officials and members of the psych staff to keep Joseph quiet about their existence which made no sense since such a wide spread powerful group could of easily arranged for Joseph to have a lethal accident. All through out the book there was stuff that just wasn't logical.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Actually the narration was the best part of the book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Cold Hands?

The scenes were the fraternity blackmailed and coerced legal officials thereby alerting such officials that there was a fraternity.

As I said this book had lots of promise and could of been really good. The anti-hero, Joseph was a Dexter like vigilante serial killer of pedophiles. Joseph snapped when his long time abuser took him to a pedophile orgy on his 16th birthday. Joseph killed his abuser and then went on a mission to kill other pedophiles. He is caught just prior to his 18th birthday and is to be charged and tried as an adult following psychiatric evaluations and treatment.

Over all the book wasn't bad enough for a two star rating however it just was nowhere good enough for a 3 star rating. This could of been a really good book.

Cold bad book

So this was a bad book. I hated it! There is almost nothing redeeming about this book. The twist and turns feels like it is made to fool you, and not to make a good story, and when we speak story: What was this book about? I feel lost after 5 hrs and 25 mins. So lost! Good Girl Torn 1 was the worst book i ever heard, and i think this is not far behind.

Bryan L. Anderson is not better. He reads it like he is on a roller coaster. up and down in intensely and way to speak. It sounds like he never ever read it before just NOW, and that is just not good! Hear the sample to hear what i mean! He does not make this book better, but i am not sure if he makes it worse ether!

Jameel Shabazz First Book Left Me Confused

Described as a thriller/suspense book, I found a bit of both, but I had a really hard time following this book.

Cold Hands is about a young boy, Joseph, who was bullied and sexually abused when he was an early teen. He was caught up in some sort of fraternal organization and at 16, his gift was to be violated by other men – not just the coach who had groomed him.

There are a lot of allusions to the Catholic Church. These bits remind me of the writing of Tiffany Reisz, however her books are sharp, cutting.

Jameel Shabazz jumps around in Joseph's life - between the here and now, flashbacks to his youth, as he becomes a pathological, serial killer murdering all of those who either hurt him or that he finds hurting other boys.

Sometimes he is remembering his kills, sometimes he is reliving his abuse and sometimes he is interacting with the nurses and doctors where he is institutionalized and awaiting trial. He is also putting his thoughts down in a notepad to serve as an autobiography of sorts.

Again, I had a really difficult time following as it jumped between past and present – and within those two categories there was a lot of confusion for me. The only thing that was perfectly clear to me was the vigil anti; murdering every man who had molested him or was hurting other young boys, just because he could.

Joseph is taken to court a few times but has no real understanding of what is going on because his lawyer does not consult him. The big question is, is Joseph fit to stand trial?

About an hour from the end, First Lady Michelle Obama makes an appearance (very odd to this listener). She explains to a judge that she wants to be hands-on in this case so as to raise awareness about the exploitation of children. Both on the national and global stage. She personally asked the judge for this case to remain open so that everyone can see it and hear what Joseph has been through. Weird!

There was a twist at the end that I did not see coming and did not make much sense to me either.


I believe this is Jameel Shabazz first book and his attempts are respected by me. I bet that future work by the author will become more focused and easy to follow. It is my impression that he was trying out different plots and outcomes and throwing lots of unnecessary details into this first work.


I am trying to focus on what most made it difficult for me to follow. Was it the topic of subject of child abuse? No. Was it the serial murderer, vigilante? No. I cannot point to one thing that stopped me from enjoying the book. I really believe it is that the author was trying to cover all things and this listener got lost amongst everything.

On one hand, please do not let my review discourage you from trying this book. However, on the other hand I cannot recommend it without expressing what I have above.

The narrator was outstanding, especially as all but a few of the characters were male. He was able to give each character their own voice – unique and appropriate.

Graphic and intense

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would say so. It was shocking, graphic and intense. It definitely held my attention despite being difficult to listen to at times due to the content. This is a much different book than I'm use to, and it might not be for me, but it's not a bad book.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I believe it did. I felt the narrator did a good job and fit the book.

enjoyed listening

Disturbing, compelling and important read

Wow... this book is unlike anything I've ever read before. The things Joseph goes through are things NO ONE should even have to think about. This book was bone chilling in a way that is different from any other- because the events that occurred to turn a victim of abuse into a 'murderer' were horrible things that were perpetrated by the very people who are supposed to be helping is the definition of horror as far as I am concerned. At times, I wasn't sure if I was reading fiction or non-fiction. You really get a chance to see what happened through Joseph's eyes. This is a book that will haunt me for awhile to come. A quick note for those of you looking for some sort of 'Dexter' type story, go elsewhere. This, sadly, is something that occurs everyday in every country and city around the world. It's far to true to life and real horror and torture of things that happen to children when people are looking the other way. If only all victims of abuse had the chance to actually put their demons to rest...
