Small Town Burning

Amy Jo Burns makes vivid the confines of small town life. That the choices involved in defining a girl's own self will have consequences in her treatment by the town—long after she should have outgrown any labels.

When the town's piano teacher is accused of molesting his students, she's perceptive enough to know that the girls who come forward will be branded and ostracized. Amy Jo Burns is observant and self reflective without being self-centered. Her writing is fluid and beautiful while being as real as it gets.

Narrator, Jorjeanna Marie gives such an unaffected performance that there is no divide between story and reader. It sounds like she's telling her own secrets.

This book deserves to be heard.

I absolutely loved this book. And, while I've just finished it and am anxious to give it the accolades it is due, I'm almost lost for words. Amy Jo Burns has a thoughtful and provocative writing style that makes it impossible not to get lost in the characters, places, and moods of the story.
She could not have picked a better person to read it as well. Jorjeana Marie was meant to read this book - I can't imagine anyone else would have done it it's full justice.
Just give it a listen - you'll be glad you did.

Great book, haughty voice

I love this story and all the words but the reader’s voice has taken the tone and made it haughty. I read the book when it first came out and loved it, but this time around the VOICE killed it for me—haughty, condescending, arrogant—not the tone that I believe the author intended. Can we get a version with the author reading?? singing the presidents and states song as intended? Using actual PITTSBURGH accent rather than the unknowing blend of New York and bland impression of what the reader THINKS is an accent from Appalachia?
