In this taut, chilling audiobook, Lester Ballard - a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape - haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail. While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance.

Cormack McCarthy is, as you'd expect, a master at drawing the reader into the story. At times, I could almost smell the honeysuckle on the wind of a humid Southern night. The disgusting parts are just as vividly rendered, so be forewarned.
Parts Silence of the Lambs, Deliverance and a little bit of Dexter, this is in many ways a much more disturbing read than The Road.

Tom Stechschulte is a fantastic narrator and his performance as Lester Ballard is distinct and really sells the evil that he embodies.

Satisfying read, disturbing and thought provoking.
Not for the squeamish, but recommended for McCarthy fans.

So much more disturbing than any current TV show

In the hands of Cormac McCarthy, a poor Southern serial killer who becomes a necrophiliac is the main character in a gothic horror artwork. McCarthy's beautiful prose sings and gives special life to this demon, presenting him in his helpless inprisonment, his addiction to human touch he's been long denied. It's a disturbing story, but there's something pitiful about it as well, and something all too human and all too real.

Wonderfully macabre

The performer nailed the accents. The story line definitely keeps you involved. Kind of like a car accidents. You know you shouldn't look but you can't stop staring.

Not what I was expecting

I adore McCarthy's prose and Stechschulte hives his work a life that I find entertaining addictive. “AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY”

Poetic, Profound and deeply Perverted

If you are a fan of Macarthys dark side, read it. No one writes stories of a social outcasts like cormac. I mix of Blood Meridians scenery descriptions and No Country storytelling, this tale will make you cringe but look forward to the next page at the same time.

Wow. I saw James Franco plugging the movie. had no idea what to expect. This book was a gate way book to Cormac Mcarthy's works for me.

A review of Child of God speaks of the author’s characteristic dignity and humor applied to this horrific analysis of the Human Condition. Sorry, I saw very little dignity anywhere here and definitely no humor.

What I did see was Cormac’s characteristic brilliant writing and his ability to dive deeply into the darkest and most desperate levels of the Inferno dwelled in by the Human Spirit. His themes and executions are powerful but The Reader can only dream that their imaginations never enter the World of Cormac McCarthy.

The narration of the book was terrific though often painful to listen to.

Narrated with care and authenticity. Written like velvet musical notes for your ears. Ugliness and horror as beautiful as death can be.

Beautifully written.

some subject matter may be a little hard to take but in classic McCarthy writing is done so well it's not a problem.

Definitely a classic gem.

This was a great book, but oh boy it's brutal and graphic. I really enjoyed it though, & it was the perfect size for a great short story.

Brutal!
