“An uplifting demonstration of how astonishingly intelligent guide dogs are and the life-changing bond they create.”—Brian Hare, author of Puppy Kindergarten

"Readers will fall in love with this heartwarming story of human-animal connection and resilience.”—Shelf Awareness

One woman's journey through progressive blindness and the extraordinary guide dog who kept her safe along the way

When ethics scholar Deni Elliott, born with limited vision, realized she could no longer navigate the world safely alone, she turned to a guide dog—a decision that reshaped her understanding of disability and independence.

Written in collaboration with master trainer Graham Buck, Catching Sight offers a behind-the-scenes look at the world of guide dog breeding and training, revealing the intelligence and decision-making skills these dogs develop from birth.

Catching Sight is for readers interested in the transformative power of human relationships with animals. As Deni confronts her changing reality, she shares the hidden world of guide dog training and introduces Alberta, a yellow Lab whose quiet brilliance changed her interaction with the world and herself.

Catching Sight offers a fresh and unforgettable perspective on disability, identity, and the power of partnership.

I liked the way the book progressed, and the author described some details that were important. Things like how it felt to walk with a guy dog how it felt to retire one and how intimate the bond. it was really well written. The perspective of the guy dog mobility instructor, Grahamm Buck, was also very interesting. It helped get depth to some parts of the book that may have been less descriptive.

Compelling story for people who don’t already know about Guide dogs

I had no idea even as a a guide dog puppy raiser how smart these dogs are and how important their training is. The author provides an emotional and informative look inside the guide dog schools and the experience of being matched with a guide dog. I knew that the dogs were carefully matched with clients but this book will show you what it really means. Additionally, you will gain insight into dog training regardless of whether he or she will become a guide dog or a service dog or just a pet. Also an eye-opening look at the problems caused by so-called service dogs that are not properly trained. I just bought the book for my mother so she can see what it is that we're doing as puppy raisers. I highly recommend for everyone!

Touching and informative, a must read for puppy raisers
