The story follows the eponymous hero and his tutor Doctor Pangloss through a series of adventures and misfortunes, all the time doggedly attempting, against the odds, to adhere to the doctor's philosophy that "all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds".

This is a story that has everything. War, peace, rape, murder, true love. The narrator kept the drama without going over the top and kept me interested to the end.

perfect narrator for the story

This is my favorite reading of my favorite piece of literature! The narration is absolutely superb!

Classic bit of comedy writing. Something everyone should read once, best sellers like this were actually seriously sardonic bits of social commentary (written 1759 -- pride and prejudice was written 1797) that helped to spark the French revolution (1789)... you wouldn't think so but it's true. So when you read it pay attention to the deconstructing of accepted norms Voltaire was sneaking into a bit a comedy hoping the critics (who in those days were fierce about stopping publication of anything that might be critical of the government, the church or the king) wouldn't notice what he was doing. That and it was bit like The Daily Show on the comedy channel, making political commentary easier to digest. I listened to the this particular audible version (this reader) which is one of many based mostly on it also being one of the cheapest versions, and he was VERY good. Will look up what else he's read.

Amusing bit of fluff, till you look deeper
