An outcast Brahmin detective. A prickly English inspector. A terrifying killer.

Chief Inspector Soobramania is called when three bodies are discovered in the space of twenty-four hours, with mutilations bearing an eerie resemblance to Jack the Ripper’s victims.

Initial suspicion centres on an English Duke visiting Hyderabad and his friend, a powerful Deccani noble and the angry stepson of one of the dead.

In the face of political pressure, Soob must ally with his rival in the British Residency Police, Inspector Wilberforce, to unearth the culprit.

So begins the cat-and-mouse game – played in the shadow of imperial politics where high birth protects foul deeds, and where blood counts for less than riches.

A rich and compelling historical crime thriller to delight fans of Vaseem Khan and Abir Mukherjee.

Amazing narration. Made the story come alive. I felt immersed in this foreign land, side by side with Sub and Sheraz. Great story, expertly narrated.

So enjoyable

I absolutely loved this historical fiction novel. It was incredibly well written, the protagonists were quite endearing, and the historical period was captured so well. At the end the notes described the extensive research that was done to support the plot & historical & geographical setting of the book, and it shows. I can't wait to listen to the next.

Historical context extremely fascinating, narration FANTASTIC

This is a great “who done it” murder mystery detective story. If that’s your cup of tea then this is a book for you.

Who done it?!

A well written, faced paced murder mystery that left me wanting more novels from this author! The narrator was spot on as well. Looking forward to her future novels…

Fast paced murder mystery

So many characters it was difficult to follow. Things happened that didn’t tie in or make sense with the storyline. Still it was a mystery not uncovering who was guilty until the end

A whodunnit mystery

The images provoked by the author’s writing will push you to continue reading. Did Jack the Ripper follow from London?

Very well written

Historical and geographical fiction is appealing because you get to learn all about the time in which the story took place, history and flavor or ethos of the location, the peoples involved if the author did his homework. This author definitely did his homework. The characters were well developed. I can envision a series based on the detective and the good doctor and would look forward to following along.

Well crafted mystery

Excellent narrator. I would like to hear more books read by him. Interesting storyline. Not a cultural context I know anything about.

Best narrator

This story had me hooked.

I was looking for a new mystery after finishing Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, etc. This story has the same potent mystery with a refreshed setting and perspective.

Taking the English classic murder mystery and placing it in a colonial melting pot in India allows the author to explore contrasting and conflicting themes. We see women treated as property in unfamiliar cultures. We see colonial powers vying for power as the wealthy send their kids to British Universities. Solving the murder requires the detectives to consider cultural perspectives that aren’t their own.

The reveal at the end was a let down. The killer had a clear motive for the crime from the get-go. The author basically beats you over the head with it. I thought for sure that the killer should have been the senior doctor. I almost took off a star for my disappointment but I can’t be upset that the story didn’t go my way.

Worthy successor to mystery classics
