They conquered the highlands.

But on the moor, something waited… to curse and conquer them.

1746, Scotland.

The redcoat forces of King George II have defeated the Highland rebels led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Now Government troops are free to plunder and punish the locals.

To avoid court martial, Captain Shawwood is ordered to lead a band of troops and map-makers to chart the most isolated and mysterious landscape of the Highlands – the mighty Rannoch Moor.

But the Moor is home to more than just bog and heather, it's a place of shadows and secrets. Before long, their expedition comes face to face with uncanny forces far greater than anything they have fought before. Even when Captain Shawwood accepts the shelter of Ishbel, a young Highland woman, he and his men still cannot escape the world of terror and vengeful desire into which they have strayed.

After his award-winning adaptations of Charles Dickens and Treasure Island, Marty Ross brings you a haunting tale of horror and dark romance. Narrated by Chris Reilly (Slow Horses) and Shirley Henderson (Dept. Q) The Dead of Rannoch Moor will take you to a landscape of terrifying mystery and beauty.

This production contains scenes of warfare, violence and sexual assault.

Very good story, all the voice actors were outstanding. The story had a lot of twists and turns. Certainly kept me interested!

The accent is the narrator!

Maybe I just wasn’t checked into this one as the other ones, but that accent kept on throwing me off, it’s far for the course with the Astoria I understand, but I couldn’t help it notice that the soldiers kind of kept on marching until the story went into another direction, which I guess all stories do… But in this case it just felt jumpy

I’m not Scottish but that plot jumped more than an Olympic hurdler

Marty Ross has extraordinary talent for gothic prose. His mastery of description and metaphor are enchanting and - though as savage and fierce as his story is - I can’t help but be mesmerized by the way he paints such vivid images with lyricism all but absent from modern skill sets. Be aware: this is a horror story… full of suspense and gore and terror with one episode of brutality followed by another. But it’s not gratuitous. It’s a fascinating reflection of what makes a human a human… or a beast, or a body, or a savage, or a monster, or a ghost. What makes good and evil? Destroyer and victim? Are these dualities actual? Or do we use these labels as masks or weapons or uniforms to tell ourselves a story we like better than the one others would tell of us? So many provoking themes… horrible in the reflection that stares back at us if we’re brave enough to look past the surface reflexes of “I can’t understand the accents” or “this is historically inaccurate” or “why so much gay stuff.” Those reviews came from people that weren’t ready or able to see beneath the grime of the spiritual moor. In short: the expected something different and thus missed the point (and therefore the mastery of the tale).

Performance was exquisite from the male narrator… and as noted, a bit tougher to understand and thus appreciate from the female. I say this as an American unused to Scottish accents. UK readers may struggle less.

My largest criticism is that Audible has yet (inexplicably) to fix the duplication of chapter 38 and the omission of 37. So we lose a critical part of the story explaining the fates of the Captain’s last surviving party members. (Audible, you have ONE JOB!!)

Besides that, would recommend to anyone ready for a haunting, suspenseful, masterfully-written and thematically-rich horror tale told within an historical backdrop.

The writing is complex, poetic, and absolutely beautiful

Superb narration of a wonderfully brutal story. It’s man at its worse. Marty Ross is brilliant at getting into the mind of savage and heartless men.

Well written but not for the faint of heart superb

The narrator draws you in and never lets you go until the end. Outstanding story.

Absolutely chilling!
