Vampires, vaqueros, and star-crossed lovers face off on the Texas-Mexico border in this supernatural western from the author of The Hacienda.

As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. But something more sinister lurks near the ranch at night, something that drains men of their blood and leaves them for dead.

Something that once attacked Nena nine years ago.

Believing Nena dead, Néstor has been on the run from his grief ever since, moving from ranch to ranch working as a vaquero. But no amount of drink can dispel the night terrors of sharp teeth; no woman can erase his childhood sweetheart from his mind.

When the United States invades Mexico in 1846, the two are brought abruptly together on the road to war: Nena as a curandera, a healer striving to prove her worth to her father so that he does not marry her off to a stranger, and Néstor as a member of the auxiliary cavalry of ranchers and vaqueros. But the shock of their reunion—and Nena’s rage at Néstor for seemingly abandoning her long ago—is quickly overshadowed by the appearance of a nightmare made flesh.

And unless Nena and Néstor work through their past and face the future together, neither will survive to see the dawn.

Why did he make nena sound like that? The female narrator did so good playing nena, she was strong, smart and funny and the Nestor narrator made her sound whiny. That’s my only complaint. I’m pleased to have listened to this book the story was amazing and the romance was sweet.

The male narrator …

I grabbed this book with the idea of a horror story and instead it gave me a love story. It was good, though it wss not what I expected.

Nestor & Nena's bond

The story was great. It had some history that tugs on the heartstrings of war and struggles people had defending their homes. I didn’t expect a love story and it was sweet. I enjoyed the writing and descriptions given for the surrounding and way of life. I enjoyed this book. The only downside for me personally were some of the Spanish words since I unfortunately don’t know much of the language but that was a small portion in the story.

Young love sprinkled with Vampires

Loved the story, but I wanted way more of Nestor’s pov chapters and way less of Nena’s. Nena was spoiled, juvenile, hot-headed, irrational, and way too hard on Nestor.

More Nestor, less Nena

I got annoyed with Nena and how she treats Nestor for the longest time. She finally comes around near the end of the book thankfully. Good story centered around northern Mexico and southern Texas.

The old west love story with el cuco

I'm so glad I read this book. It's well written and shines a new light on vampires written in the style of a Mexican gothic romance/war story. And since the history hits close to home, I recognized a lot of the area (and history) being described.

Isabel Cañas delivers a beautifully written vampire story

Good original story. Vampires in South Texas is something I have never read or heard of before. But it is sold as horror and it’s mostly a gothic romance

I love Hispanic authors and themes.

I've listened to The Hacienda and eeally enjoyed it and was looking forward to this one. I enjoyed it but not as much as Cañas' first novel but still good and thought her interpretation of vampires was intering, a little different than I'm used to.

Another enjoyable gothic tale
