An insightful new exploration of Sozin’s and Roku’s friendship

The story brings back the fun adventure of the original Kyoshi books with a new kingdom’s politics to consider. This is certainly not the overly political Yang Chen series, and brings more action and sincere interpersonal conflicts. We get to see an avatar that struggles to let go of their home nation and the consequences that it brings. Great new start and I really hope to hear more from Roku. I would love to read about his and Sozin’s conflict over the first earth kingdom fire nation colony.

Fire!!

This book, hoping it’s the first of many of Roku or at least one of two, was absolute fire. Loved every part of it. I yearn for more in this universe. Thank you!

Audiobook narrator Queen

This book wasn't as well written as the other books but Nancy Wu is an amazing narrator!!

not as good as the Kioshi ones imo

this one wasn't as good as the Kioshi or maybe even the Yangchen books, imo. it's still worth a read if you like the series though, and I'll probably still pick up any subsequent books that continue Roku's story, once they're available.

Great story

Even though most people listening are probably already familiar with Roku and sozin the insight character is still amazing. The build up to what you know is going to happen just adds a new layer to the lore

A beautiful story portrayed wonderfully by Nancy Wu!

A brilliant story that deals with themes of loss, connection, and understanding the pain of those around. My only fault with this story is that Roku and Sozin had a true interaction at the end of the book. It feels like a contradiction with established lore from the original series where it had been said that they didn't see each other for 12 years, not until Roku was an established Avatar. However, it was such a brief interaction only a few months after Roku had left, that it may be easy to overlook and maintain continuity so long as they don't have another interaction before Roku masters the elements in the second novel. A strong highlight was learning more about Gyatso in his younger years, and the voice used Nancy felt perfect for most of the characters, especially young Gyatso. Overall, this story is an easy 5 stars with the only major flaw being that which is already been mentioned. I'm excited for the next installment and to discover what comes next for Roku and his friends.

Starts very slow but ends beautifully

Enjoyed learning about such beloved characters. Heartfelt story line. Familiar themes regarding feelings of unworthiness amongst newly found avatars.

The merging of known avatar history with creating new

Wonderfully intertwined with what we know of the avatar-verse with new information! Twists and turns and a wonderful set up for even more books!

story and build up was good

bittersweet ending and complex and satisfying edition to the avatar series. Another nice job by narrator.
