A nuclear attack. A collapsing society. A world covered in ash.

The Alt Apocalypse is the newest ground-breaking series from Tom Abrahams.

It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). This series, which can be heard in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. But every audiobook dunks them into a new, alternate apocalypse and a nuclear holocaust - an earthquake, a flood, a wildfire, a hurricane, a plague, and even zombies.

Different heroes will emerge in each novel. Different characters will survive and perish. Your favorite character dies in one audiobook? He or she will be back in the next. In the end, you'll unwind the loose thread that connects every character and every stand-alone story.

In Ash, Abrahams tells the story of four college friends, an ex-con, a lonely fry cook, and a secretive group of prepared civilians as they each battle to survive in southern California after a series of nuclear attacks. Theirs is a gray world covered in ash and nuclear fallout.

Do they hunker down? Do they bug out? Do they find their salvation above ground or below?

I enjoyed this listen. It didn't wow me but it was definitely an interesting tale. What you'll want to keep in mind is that this isn't a story about the how or the why of the apocalypse but a story of a couple small groups of people and how they react and try to survive in reaction to the nuclear attacks. My biggest gripe is that I just didn't feel too attached to some of the characters and when certain events occur it didn't really feel like there was a major impact. With that said, I wasn't bored with this listen and overall it was enjoyable!

Narration by Kevin Pierce was as expected if you've listened to any of his other works; a pleasant listen as usual!

Overall, this book is worth a listen if you're interested in survival stories. I like the premise of having the same cast revisit different scenarios and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Great survival story

I've read/listened to other post-apocalyptic fiction, some I've enjoyed more than others. I'd put this one in the middle.

I got to know the characters but didn't particular bond with any of them. There were spots in the story where I saw opportunities to introduce tension, which didn't materialize into anything of substance (e.g. a sense of cult-like menace or foreshadowing regarding the motives/interests of the folks running Oasis). My strongest overall impression after finishing the book is that 'survival' is mostly a matter of luck and being in the right place at the right time, that the ones who thrive are the ones who started prepping (with significant financial investment) years before the apocalyptic event, and that everyone is probably going to die anyway.

Having said this, I don't regret listening to the story, for the following reasons. First, I really like the idea that you can't depend on the military to come charging in like white knights to the rescue. They may be decimated, disorganized, or prioritizing and people surviving in small clusters will be lower on their priority list. Second, I enjoyed the debate about being charitable/altruistic versus being self-interested. I can understand that this would be a significant inner struggle for some people, but no struggle at all for others -- that's fascinating to me. I've done thousands and thousands of hours of volunteering over my lifetime (so far!) and I wonder how easily I'd be able to switch into an 'every man for himself' mentality and possibly risk my own well-being to help a vulnerable family. Third, I'm curious to see where the author takes us in future books with the same cast of characters in different perilous situations. One of the things I enjoyed most about watching 'American Horror Story' on television was that we got to see the same actors/actresses reincarnated into different roles and storylines. I'm curious to see how Tom Abrahams reincarnates the characters we got to know in Ash. Finally, the narration was very well done - I wouldn't hesitate to listen to Kevin Pierce in the future.

3.5* - interesting multi-story concept

First of all, I read the description wrong on this book. I thought the book was a series of vignettes that explored different apocalyptic scenarios. It's a book SERIES that does so - each book covers a different scenario. But I was intrigued about the idea for the series. Take the same cast of characters in each book and put them in different scenarios. Their outcomes could differ.

For Abrahams' first book in this series I was really impressed - and he starts it with a bang. This book follows three main groups; a group of college students, an ex-con, and a surfer dude with his dog; right after Los Angeles gets nuked. The author does a good job of moving the story along. Sometimes, during this genre type, authors tend to plod along or get tied up in existential crisis too much. Obviously, those themes need to be addressed but the book doesn't wane in moving characters forward. Honestly, the biggest thing that made me happy when reading this book is when a character finds shelter and immediately fills up the tub and sinks with water. I've read so many post-apocalypse books that this small, intelligent action wins me over quite a bit.

The book does a good job of giving each group of characters their arc and doesn't delve into unnecessary sci-fi like mutants or monsters that seems to be a genre staple. I would say that the college students are sometimes hard to differentiate from and their character build kind of takes place later in the book. However, this book is a lot of fun and does a good job at the primary goal the characters have - to survive. I will definitely check out the other books in Abrahams' series as they are release. Final Grade - A

I was already a fan of Tom Abrahams, and the man is no stranger to telling post apocalyptic tales. For this new series he's come up with a crazy new concept. Each book is basically going to be a stand alone tale and yet he's going to use the same characters in each book, with them getting thrown into a new type of apocalypse in each volume. In Ash Tom takes various characters (an ex-con, some college students, a group of preppers, and a loner) and throws them into a world that has suffered a nuclear attack. It's an interesting collection of characters and the story is quite entertaining. As cool as this concept it, the one issue I have with it is that I love how most apocalyptic series have us following the same group of characters over a prolonged time. And while this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger or anything like that, I am still left wondering what comes next for them. Of course I won't ever find out, because what comes next for these characters is a brand new apocalypse. That being said I did enjoy the book and look forward to seeing what kind of meat grinder Tom will drop them into next.

The book is narrated by THE voice of apocalyptic fiction, the talented Kevin Pierce, and as well the man delivers an excellent performance.

I picked this one up because I really like Kevin Pierce as a narrator and definitely enjoy apocalypse fiction. This one was definitely an excellent entry to this genre. The story is engaging and well told. If you are a fan of the genre, you should definitely check this one out!

Great apocalyptic fiction

I like the book and am really interested to see how the series continues. I like the idea of using the same charactors in different settings. I am hoping it shows how different choices affect the group dynamics.

Good series idea
