Good Story <br />

Interesting story. The narrator however was very monotone. It took a while to get used to listening to him read the book. Other than that, it was a good book.

pretty good and thorough

this book really seemed to cover everything. and really answered all the questions i ever had. The only thing i could have done without is the all the background info and such on people who didn't seem to matter. just lot of reference info that wasn't needed. but still it is worth the read if you the complete story whether or not you know a lot about the subject. great book

Increase speed for tolerable listening

Thanks to those reviewers who recommended increasing the speed on this book. I was about to give up due to the tedious narration. Once I increased the speed to 1.3 the narration became much more listenable and the story became engaging. Give it a try before you bail on this book, in case it helps for you!

Depends on what you're into ...

Ain't gonna lie, this narrator is straight-up Professor Binns (Google it, muggles)...dude sounds like he just uncovered a water-damaged back issue of the BPS Research Digest which he is now reading aloud through hypermature cataracts and seriously smudged trifocals. I found Eric Brooks' delivery oddly hypnotic and occasionally hilarious.

As for content, true crime doesn't happen in a vacuum. If you're down for a historical and geographical context, object relations theory, the evolution of gender studies and a whole lot of spilled tea, this is your book. Peter Graham did his research and does a journeyman's job of walking you through every aspect of this case, including but not limited to the crime, trial, legacy, and the background and speculative motivation of everyone involved, from parents to Peter Jackson. This book serves as a thorough index for white paper nerds who want to learn more. Two thumbs up.

Factual true crime; well researched

Perhaps a bit too detailed for the casual true crime reader, but an interesting character study.

Unfortunately, I must agree with others in stating that this reader would have needed a great deal more coaching to make the performance listenable. I listened to the entire thing at 1.4 speed to get through it.

I don't mean this in an unkind way, but sometimes, things like voiceover should be left to the professionals. The reader was, sadly, very untalented for nonfiction narration and should look for a different line of work.

Very interesting history. Also terrible to know that the girls only served 5 years for brutal premeditated murder.

Please do not pay attention to the bad reviews about the narrator

This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. I have great interest in this crime after seeing “Heavenly Creatures” in the early 90’s. The narrator was excellent for this kind of book. It is written like a police report, psychiatric paper, and a narrative of the cultures and norms of the time. One thing I had never heard about was what happened to the girls after the trial, one of them becoming a famous author. It also went over their mental issues, including what they knew at the time, and new information that today’s doctors would use to diagnose them. I couldn’t put it down. I listened to the entire thing in 3 days. Give this book a chance - you won’t be sorry!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An extraordinary story in every way

Of the 100 or so true crime stories I've listened to, this is definitely in the top 10. The characters are unforgettable and intriguing observations mark every page. Narrator was fine once I speeded him up by 30%. Though I had seen the film Heavenly Creatures, this book held my interest throughout.

Worst reader ever for very good book

The reader is so shockingly robotic and slow I wondered whether it was a computer generated voice! Play it at least at 1.3x speed for it to sound remotely normal.

I would recommend that they read the print book and skip this audio version.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His reading is flat, labored and sometimes halting, without any emotion. And he hisses the final "s" on plurals and possessives. Very unpleasant to listen to.

Do you think Anne Perry needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I would like to learn more about her life after her release from prison and before she began publishing, but those years are private and should be kept that way if Ms. Perry doesn't want to talk about her life.

This book contains only the information that came out at the time of the trial and during the imprisonment of the two girls. Neither of them contributed in any way to the book. As far as I could tell, no one involved was interviewed.
