Resumen del Editor

This book is a standalone prequel to The Dublin Trilogy.

For Detective Bunny McGarry, life is complicated, and it is about to get more so.

It’s 1999 and his hard won reputation amongst Dublin’s criminal fraternity, for being a massive pain in the backside, is unfortunately shared by his bosses. His partner has a career-threatening gambling problem and, oh yeah, Bunny's finally been given a crack at the big time. He’s set the task of bringing down the most skilled and ruthless armed robbery gang in Irish history. So the last thing he needs in his life is yet another complication.

Her name is Simone. She is smart, funny, talented and, well, complicated. When her shocking past turns up to threaten her and Bunny’s chance at a future, things get very complicated indeed. If the choice is upholding the law or protecting those he loves, which way will the big fella turn?

Angels in the Moonlight is part of Caimh McDonnell’s critically acclaimed Dublin Trilogy series, which melds fast-paced action with a distinctly Irish acerbic wit, and it is complicated.

Angels in the Moonlight was selected as a book of the month in the Rick O'Shea bookclub, Ireland's largest bookclub.

Praise for Angels in the Moonlight

“Quite possibly the best book I’ve read this year. The writing is tremendous; Caimh McDonnell has a gift for storytelling and leads his readers on a merry journey through his books, regaling them with humour and wit.” (The Quiet Knitter)

Angels in the Moonlight is bloody brilliant. McDonnell doesn’t put a foot wrong. Perfection on a page!” (Bloomin’ Brilliant Books)

“This Dublin-based police procedural has an intriguing, multi-pronged plot that flows smoothly without getting bogged down by details. Mystery fans will enjoy the roller-coaster ride. The prose is clean, sharp, and lively. This mystery, deftly seasoned with humor and Irish slang, is memorable and powerful. The characters are compelling and well-developed. From protagonist Detective Bunny McGarry and his fellow coppers to peripheral characters like the streetwise nuns, this book is full of memorable characters.” (The Booklife Prize from Publisher’s Weekly)

Humorous Listen

Angels in the Moonlight by Caimh McDonnell is a humorous listen. There are many layers to the book. I enjoyed the story although I thought some characters were a little too stereotypical. Morgan C Jones was great performing the book.

Confused by the love for the narration.

The story is great. The narration is so strange I'm going to buy the Kindle version. It seriously reminds me of Carroll O'Connor's portrayal of Archie Bunker on All In the Family. Which worked for a satire set in New York, but is so distracting in this book. I'm not sure if it's because I'm American and don't know the nuances of the Irish accent -- but I've listened to hundreds of books and there are some amazing Irish narrators on Audible. This one doesn't work for me. Sorry.

Gotta love Bunny

Bunny McGarry is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite characters! I’ve read the first two of the Dublin trilogy so it was great to get some background on Bunny. The parts with him coaching are especially hilarious and I could probably read a whole book just of him with his hurling team. I’m not familiar with Cork accents but I love the narrator’s performance of Bunny. However, although I imagine it’s probably difficult for an Irishman to do a voice for a Southern woman, the voice for Simone was a little hard to listen to.

Very funny!

Entertaining and clever, with unexpected twists. Bunny, with his incomprehensible Cork accent, is an unexpectedly endearing hero.

So far great, except -

Not even done yet but so far I love the writing, the humor and the characters. Morgan Jones gives voice wonderfully to all but one, and it’s my only issue with this audio. Bunny’s county Cork accent is laid on so thick that the whiny singsong is hard to listen to and flattens the written layers of the character into monotony. BTW fellow readers A) he’s NOT Scottish B) Gringo is so named not because of his heritage, but because his last name is Spain. The writing is really excellent so I will stick with it. Hope the sound of Bunny’s character improves because the writing is great.
PS - I’ve now read books 0-3. Not only is the Cork accent not a problem, but I’m absolutely hooked on the series. Threads from book 0 carry on through the other books, so I’m glad I started with this one.

Narrator exquisitely captures accents

The comic action takes off from the first paragraph. McDonnell’s writing is vividly cinematic. But the narrator brings the characters to life as few could. He’s a genius at capturing the nuances of regional Irish accents and attitudes. (One review was highly critical of the narrator for failing to do a Scottish accent for a character named Bunny. That’s because Bunny is from Cork.)
I always appreciate it when Audible gets the accents from my home country right!!
