Acerca de esta escucha
Discover the incredible true story of the legends who built an American empire. The will to succeed defines the greatness of men.
Great men are forged through a combination of social, economic, and political conditions favoring both the individual and the greater good. When the conditions are just right, everybody wins. Yet, when one interest trumps another, somebody must lose. It is this juxtaposition that defines history; either man can better his own situation at the expense of others or improve everybody’s situation at his own expense.
Character is often built from the latter and can carry men through the toughest of times. In fact, history shows us that a little bit of grit and determination can go a long way toward building something greater than oneself. This is what makes some people titans. In addition, people must often think outside the box to accomplish this greatness. In other words, greatness is achieved by taking risks and by doing something different than the everyday. It is this boldness that makes history.
Take a journey into the minds of the titans who created the American empire.
Would you risk it all to achieve greatness?
In this audiobook, you will:
- Learn how Cornelius Vanderbilt grows from a steamboat entrepreneur to the head of a railroad empire
- Discover the fascinating story of how John D. Rockefeller built an oil monopoly
- Glimpse into the past where Andrew Carnegie built an unstoppable steel industry
- Observe how the biggest titan in banking, JP Morgan, came to be a tycoon of finance
- Read how Nikola Tesla and Thomas Jefferson powered our nation

Historia
The modern American economy was the creation of four men: Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J. P. Morgan. They were the giants of the Gilded Age, a moment of riotous growth that established America as the richest, most inventive, and most productive country on the planet. Acclaimed author Charles R. Morris vividly brings these men and their times to life. The Tycoons tells the incredible story of how these four determined men wrenched the economy into the modern age, inventing a nation of full economic participation that could not have been imagined earlier.

In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Thomas Edison was born into a hard-working but attentive family. He struggled in school and became deaf at an early age. Born on February 11, 1847, Edison would become, arguably, the best-known American inventor of all time. His invention of the light bulb was one of more than 1,000 patents he held during his lifetime. Others included the phonograph, the electrical grid, and motion pictures. His work changed the way we see and hear the world around us.

Americans have long been skeptical of corporations, and that skepticism has only grown more intense in recent years. Meanwhile, corporations continue to amass wealth and power at a dizzying rate, recklessly pursuing profit while leaving society to sort out the costs. In For Profit, law professor William Magnuson argues that the story of the corporation didn’t have to come to this. Throughout history, he finds, corporations have been purpose-built to benefit the societies that surrounded them.

Historia
A landmark work from one of the preeminent historians of our time: the first published biography of Andrew W. Mellon, the American colossus who bestrode the worlds of industry, government, and philanthropy, leaving his transformative stamp on each. Following a boyhood in 19th-century Pittsburgh, during which he learned from his Scotch-Irish immigrant father the lessons of self-sufficiency and wealth accumulation, Andrew Mellon overcame painful shyness to become one of America's greatest financiers.

Loved it!
historical-figures, historical-places-events, historical-research, biography
How can I give a dispassionate review when two of the men are The Library Builder (Carnegie) and my
favorite Trust Buster and former NYC Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt? Brief bios of each of
particular industry leaders and innovators are presented warts and all with a wrap up and key points at the end of each presentation. Who knew that JP Morgan recovered from Rheumatic Fever as a child and lost his first love to tuberculosis at an early age? Well and concisely written without vindictiveness or whitewash. Highly recommend!
I love listening to narrator Samuel Hairston with his cadencing and deeper voice quality. Sometimes there are regional pronunciations that are not what I hear every day, but they are far less intrusive than some I hear in books with medical terms.
I won this audiobook in a giveaway! I really win!

Enjoyable highlights of the men that made America
American Titans is an easy listen that covers some of the most important people of the late 19th and early 20th century. It gives you the highlights of the impact they had on the country.
The only downside is the recording quality is shaky. Volume changes chapter to chapter and you can ear audio quality differences when edits were made. It takes you out of the experience when those things happen.
If you want an introduction to the people listed on the table of content, this is worth your time.

Good History Lesson
I was given this free review copy audio-book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of American Titans The Tycoons Who Built America by Michael Gray and narrated by Samuel Hairston. This book was enlightening and educational about the history of the men who helped develop America. While I might disagree with the methods and processes they applied in achieving their goals, I cannot agree with the outcome and how they helped shape our country. The narrator did a good job telling the story. He made it easy to listen to the story.

Build It
Looking for a quick overview of some of America’s most famous titans of industry (or Robber Barons if you prefer that point of view)? American Titans opens with chapters on Cornelius Vanderbilt, John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P Morgan giving quick but decent bios of each man. Then it moves into what I thought was the best part of the book—an analysis of how industrialism factored into the election of 1896 followed up by a look at the trustbuster, Theodore Roosevelt. Finally he wraps up with a quick look at Nicola Tesla whom I knew the least about and thus enjoyed the most. (Actually Gray finishes with a discussion of Thomas Jefferson, which was interesting even if I didn’t understand why he chose to include Jefferson and put him out of chronological order).
So Jefferson aside, if you’re looking for a quick survey of some of the men who helped to build modern corporate America, Americans Titans is a great place to start.
