Resumen del Editor

One minute Amaryllis Duvane is the belle of the London season - a "diamond of the first water", desired by every man and envied by every woman. Even better, she's about to marry the man of her dreams.

But when her father dies, Amaryllis loses more than a parent - she loses her fortune. Left penniless, she's forced to depend on the generosity of her wealthy relations, who make her work as a servant to her own socially ambitious cousins.

When her ex-fiancé, the devastatingly handsome marquess of Merechester, courts one of her relatives, Amaryllis can't bear the thought of him seeing what's become of her - or how much she still desires him.

Cute

Decent book to have on in the background. Predictable but enjoyable. A few turns of phrase got a smile out of me, and the ending was a fun surprise that confirmed what I thought might have happened.

Clueless martyr...AGAIN

I did not enjoy this book very much and wonder where the clever, humorous author had gone that wrote Regency books that were lighthearted and fun such as the Poor Relation series that I loved listening to. In that series even the villains were at times lovable and helpful but these people were so horrible it was depressing. Not only that but the victims are always so self righteously self destructive and never tell the truth of their feelings thinking they are saving someone by deciding to do what THEY think is best for them. Do they never think of respecting the other person to be able to handle the truth? In book after book it’s always the same. I don’t think it’s love to be dishonestly “noble”. It is grossly unfair and causes me to hate this outline for books. I really wish a book would allow the characters to be respectfully honest to the people they supposedly love so much and then see what happens. It would be interesting to read more about the running of these households, the farming and if any of them had grown to feel this system of preordained stations in life was bad for their country. I keep reading the M.C. Beaton books because even at her worst she is still a great author. She doesn’t do bodice rippers or bad language and keeps the violence to a minimum. I love the way her writing is constructed and in this genre she has no equal.
