lyrical, gorgeous descriptions of nature and birds…

funny at times, appalachian culture, small town atmosphere. central character, sheriff, a little too idealized. Richard Ferrone… what’s not to like!

Great. I was raised in this area of the country. Beautiful portrayal of my home.

OK story

Ron Rash is an OK writer. There is nothing wrong with his work, but it is not particularly enlightening. It's not much of a mystery compared to someone like Toby Neal, for example, but it is a nice story. The characters are one dimensional. The poetic nature descriptions feel gratuitous and Rash's inability to portray romance is laughable. "Then we made love." This is a work that took three years to write, but it feels like the product of a writing mill, not a thoughtful, talented, serious writer.

Distracting overwrought performance and dreadfully clichéd poetry.

A promising and interesting story repeatedly interrupted by a breathless and overwrought third/first person female narration and dreadful flights in to bad nature poetry.
The story is suspenseful, and does a nice job capturing the cultural and domestic circumstances that drive it, however, I could not get over the self-conscious narration and prose of the female character.

Almost outperforms Serena... Almost.

Nothing could beat Serena, though.

Another work of art by Ron Rash. He is definitely my favorite author.

Decent, not stellar

Kind of expected more from the author of Cold Mountain. Maybe that warps my ratings. Not terrible, just didn’t live up to my expectations.

Not my cup of tea

Although I found the writing pleasant, the story line was outside my liking. I am certain it will be enjoyed by others, simply not me.

Didn't care about the characters or the plot.
The interlude chapters of flowery language were extremely tedious.

Don't read.

The narrators were too exaggerated and their voices for other characters were so aggravating. The writing was slow. The actual story doesn't pick up until over halfway through the book. The crime is about killing a species of fish, and it's like every typical who-done-it book. I was forced to read this for a book report, and I had nothing great to say in that either. Don't waste your time when there are plenty of other books.
