"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

When Fitzwilliam Darcy spoke these words to Elizabeth Bennet as part of his marriage proposal, they expressed his concealed feelings completely, but their meaning was at odds with the rest of his prideful and arrogant offer of marriage. It was therefore rather easy for Elizabeth to reject his offer in much the same manner. But what if Darcy, never one at ease when trying to speak of inner sentiments, had realized beforehand how his intended proposal would sound to the young woman he hoped to make his bride? What if he had attempted a much more civil and thoughtful proposal of marriage? Could Elizabeth Bennet have coldly and angrily rejected an offer made in such a manner?

A Most Civil Proposal, a variation on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, examines and explores how the lives of the two main characters and their families and friends might have turned out differently had Darcy realized his error beforehand and thus avoided being so forcefully instructed and corrected by the love of his life.

This one of my favorite Pride and Prejudice variations. Those who do not like non-canon stories or mature content may disagree, but for me, it’s excellent. I’ve read the book a couple of times and wondered what it would be like as an audiobook. I wasn’t disappointed, with just a couple of minor exceptions. The main one is that of all the female characters, the narrator seemed to make Elizabeth sound the least feminine. Second, there is an error in the audio where the first few words of a sentence are repeated.

I do highly recommend both the book and the audiobook.

Very Good Variation

Great story. The audio was really more unique than other stories I’ve listened it. The background sound were also a unique touch too.

Love it

The narration was acceptable, not great but O.K. it is difficult for a man to speak in a feminine sounding voice. However, what was annoying for me was they created a break between all 30+ chapters and played music that I didn't particularly like.

music!

Although the format of the production took a couple chapters to get use to, I very much enjoyed the story and performance. This was a well thought out “what if” story and is well worth listening to.

A different take on a great story!

This story starts with the infamous Hunsford Awful Proposal. However, instead of a blow up and an exit and then THE LETTER, there is verbal explanation and questions. Jane and Bingley are discussed heatedly. Wickham’s lying story is refuted. Then the Collinses arrive home and discover Elizabeth crying, running upstairs to her room and a stern looking Mr Darcy leaving the parsonage. Leaving Mr Collins shocked and coming up with his own wild interpretation and of course having to discuss this with Lady Catherine. Who goes off on her own fantasy beliefs about the story. And you have lots of loose lipped servants spreading their own interpretations of what they overheard.

That’s the beginning of a great story primarily about Our Dear Couple coming together rather quickly and spending their time loving each other (Warning here. This is quite the warm love story with graphic details some people don’t want to read about.). The rest of the world has to be dealt with, namely those nasty rumors. They lead to a breach in Elizabeth’s relationship with her father for most of the book. But it has mostly lovely happily ever afters for all who deserve it.

I loved the epilogue. Recommended for lovers of Pride & Prejudice variations. Great narrator.

Realistic, original yet staying close enough to canon, very romantic.
