Resumen del Editor

Rainey Paxton was born addicted to heroin.

In the fragile first hours of Rainey’s life, hospital doctors and nurses fight to keep her alive. Several months later, she is released into her parents' custody, where she is forced to live on neglect and tainted breast milk. Constrained in her home infested with drug addicts and drifters, Rainey’s drug-addicted parents leave little hope for her protection.

While Rainey is still an infant, her aunt Sophie visits her and finds the baby dirty and hungry. A bond forms between the two until tragedy strikes. Rainey is alone again until her sister Ivy is born, and the child breathes new life into Rainey’s small, isolated world.

But her parents have another plan, and with no one there to intervene on Rainey’s behalf, she must make sacrifices to feed her parents’ cravings and to keep her sister safe.

Follow Rainey’s journey from a house crawling with junkies to the violent confines of a juvenile detention center, where she finds friendship and learns fearlessness from the most unexpected people.

Close to Home

The story of Rainey Paxton is only a bit more extreme than the childhood I had.
I quickly became a champion for Rainey through this story.

Reminds me of The Child Called It series.

this story is so unbelievable. From Sophie leaving Rainey in the abusive drug addictive family to the ridiculous arrest.

Great boook

I am in my car driving all day for work and I couldn't stop listening. I just wish the next ones in the Rainy Paxton series were on audible.

incredible writing, inspiring journey through hell

I could not quit listening to this book, Rainy's journey through life from birth to her teenage years. Her pain, her fears, her strength, and her resilience, holding onto what little hope she could. Her character and persistent fight to survive and hold onto the ones she loves in memory and in life is the amazing message for others that have to face such abuse throughout life. My own experiences and hearing this authors stories helps me to understand and work with children that have face their own hell in their short live. It isa difficult subject to hear or read, but it is happening all over, all around us and these children need as much understanding and love as they can get. Paige Dearth has been one of my favorite authors since I read her first book and listening to them now has been great because I have not had as much time to sit and actually read. The narrator did an incredible job reading as well. Helped to immerse the readers into little Rainy Paxton's life. I've already begun the second book of this series.

Hits home

This story is so relatable. Very well put together. So often the families that deal with drug addicted relatives siblings or parents are not brave enough to tell what we go through and how we suffer.

Very well written

LOVED this book! It was so well written it made you feel like you knew the girl. I cried through out this book because I felt so bad for the little girl. It opens your mind up to what some kids have to go through. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!!!

Not Realistic

Did the author even do research into juvenile detention centers? I've been a Juvenile Probation Officer for 23 years. Juvenile detention centers are not the same as juvenile prisons. Neither of these have bail or a commissary. You don't put money on books. There is a heck of a lot more supervision; kids are not left alone as depicted in this book. Are some places worse than others? Of course, but all the detention center depiction is that of an adult jail. Juveniles are not found guilty. They are adjudicated delinquent. Now, the depiction of the home life is sadly quite true...and while girls do things for money and survival, they are not hooked! They are children being trafficked. This could have been a great book.
