Resumen del Editor

When Hollywood star Dorothy Dacres plummets six floors from her hotel terrace on the night of her greatest triumph, it initially looks like a tragic accident. But her death is so very convenient to her many enemies that press-man Freddy Pilkington-Soames, who was there on the night she died, begins to suspect foul play. And when cocaine is found in her room, it only complicates matters further.

Soon, Freddy is chasing across London on the trail of drug dealers, in reluctant company with his deadly rival, Corky Beckwith, the most unscrupulous reporter in Fleet Street, who will do anything for a story. With the future of a film studio at stake, can Freddy find the culprit - and get one up on Corky - before he becomes the killer's next victim?

Good mystery, fun characters

I saw some less-than-flattering reviews, but decided to try this series anyway and am very glad I did. I've now listened to the first two books and really liked them both. (Second one definitely better in terms of the mystery itself.)

Freddy is a lot of fun and smarter than I expected he'd be. (Not Bertie Wooster. ☺) The combination of reporter and a man in society is interesting, and there are some funny scenes that are great. The police aren't portrayed as fools, which I like too.

The narrator is very good. No problem distinguishing who is speaking and the female voices aren't overly high pitched.

I guess if you're looking for the cozy pattern of "young woman not in law enforcement, solving mysteries to clear her friends/family of murder, as the actual detective falls in love with her" - this isn't it. But if you want good stories, decent mysteries, and a few laughs along the way, here it is.

Another Fun Freddy mystery

Freddy is back. He attends a party filled with folks from the world of theater and one of them falls from the terrace/roof of the hotel. Or was she pushed? Theatrical rivalries and drugs are both issues: was one or both of these a motive for murder?

Freddy wants to get a scoop for his newspaper reporting job, solve the crime, and yet do the Right Thing as an English Gentleman.

A fun read and even more entertaining as a listen. Gethyn Edwards does a fine job reading this story.

Can’t deal with the narrator

This story will probably go somewhere interesting, but I can’t listen beyond a few chapters because the narrator is too much. Drawled out, overly dramatic females, congested and lisping reporters...he’s got plenty of range and voices, that’s for sure. Just doesn’t work for me.
