Epic Dragon Fantasy Book

The way this was narrated was spectacular! I felt like I was immersed in the story. I really enjoyed the story itself as well. It is very fast-paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters can be a little annoying at times. But they have character arcs worth pursuing to the end. I’m going to get the next book in the series.

Great story

Loved the detail in the story. Very intimate. Excellent characters. Cannot wait to see what happens next!!! No stop action.

Excellent listen

I wasn’t sure what to expect but was taken in pretty quickly. The world building and storytelling is excellent and the narrators really make the story. Definitely worth the listen.

Intense, refreshing, and downright excellent!

To say A Breaking of Realms is a great dragon fantasy is undoubtedly true, but also limiting. This story was simply excellent, genres aside. It was far more than I bargained for despite walking in with preexisting expectations after reading several convincing endorsements. While it offers nearly everything one generally hopes for in a dragon fantasy, it does so without ever feeling tropey or derivative. The world of Elondria feels as real as our own, layered in power struggles and swampy politics, while offering an authentic protagonist, Skálda, from which to experience it. Her sense of integrity creates a great deal of the local and regional tension, but much like the real world, the right choice often puts people on the most difficult of paths. And given who she is, such decisions feel completely natural.

Beyond our main protagonist, Young also gives us a well-devised grouchy elven ranger whose motivations remain murky but considerably better than the sociopathic elves on the hunt for humans who refuse to do their bidding. I would happily read a story featuring just him, which says a lot about the quality of the side characters!

And lastly, an oft-overlooked aspect to this difficult craft is pacing, which is another strength Young puts on full display here, allowing everything else to shine in the best way possible. There were several well-timed reveals of lore, as well as personal anecdotes that reveal hidden motivations, or connect major points of intrigue in ways that reward the patient, attentive reader. Things like that, when done right, are the difference between good and excellent. A Breaking of Realms strikes excellence square in the face with a flaming fire iron. Much to mine and everyone else’s delight, there remains much more story to tell! I can’t wait to see Skálda’s, Bale’s, and even Aesir’s growth in subsequent volumes.

A Breaking of Realms has proven that dragon fantasies still have plenty of fresh fire to breathe.

Also, the dual narration was flawless.

I’m getting the second book

Very good book, a different take on a dragon book. I enjoyed the narration also.

Distracting read

I won’t pick up any novels in this genre I find the style of the litrpg pulling me out of the story.

Not for me

This seems like a story for younger readers. I found the main characters not worthy of being considered heroes. Granted I only got half way through the book. It was trying too hard to create a new world with terms and places and everything that it was too tedious for this babyboomer to want to finish.

Confusing Storyline

The storyline fell well short of my expectations. Many chapters had audio that was difficult to follow at normal speed, forcing me to slow it down just to understand the words. These issues significantly impacted the overall listening experience.

It’s not a documentary

The woman reads the story as if it’s a documentary. Her tone is very off from the way the story should be read. It’s like nails on a chalk board. I didn’t get past chapter 4.
