The Shōbōgenzō is the recognized spiritual masterpiece by the 13th- century Japanese Sōtō Zen Master Eihei Dōgen. It is comprised of discourses that he gave to his disciples, in person or in writing, at various times between 1231 and his death 22 years later at age 53. These discourses cover a wide range of topics pertinent to those in monastic life, though often also relevant to those training in lay life.

Zen Master Tales collects never-before-translated stories of four prominent Zen masters from the Edo period of Japanese history (1603–1868). Drawn from an era that saw the “democratization” of Japanese Zen, these stories paint a picture of robust, funny, and poignant engagement between Zen luminaries and the emergent chonin or “townsperson” culture of early modern Japan. These masters affirmed that the essentials of Zen practice could be conveyed to all members of Japanese society in ordinary speech, including even comic verse and work songs.

Historia
These three sutras are the most important texts for the Chan (Chinese) and Zen (Japanese) Buddhist traditions, though they are very different in character and provenance. The Diamond Sutra (Vajracheddikā Prajña Pārāmitā Sutra in Sanskrit) has the distinction of being 'the earliest complete survival of a dated (11 May 868) printed book’. It was found in the Dunhuang Caves in China in 1900. The title, Diamond Cutter, outlines its purpose, which is to cut through ignorance to attain to perfect wisdom or ultimate reality.

Drawn directly from 24 Pali, Sanskrit, and Chinese sources, and retold by Thich Nhat Hanh in his inimitably beautiful style, this book traces the Buddha's life slowly and gently over the course of 80 years, partly through the eyes of Svasti, the buffalo boy, and partly through the eyes of the Buddha himself. Old Path White Clouds is destined to become a classic of religious literature.

Treasured by Buddhists of all traditions, The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. This text has been studied, practiced, and expounded upon in an unbroken tradition for centuries, first in India, and later in Tibet. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the Bodhisattvas - those who renounce the peace of individual enlightenment and vow to work for the liberation of all beings.

Historia
Several schools of Zen developed in China in the 9th century. The Rinzai (Chinese, Lin-chi) sect of Zen was introduced to Japan by the Chinese priest Ensai in 1191. Rinzai Buddhism emphasizes the use of koans, paradoxical puzzles or questions that help the practitioner to overcome the normal boundaries of logic. Whatever the method of reaching enlightenment, once reached we realize the state of enlightenment we sought was there within us all along. The method is the gate, but there need not be any gate, since the gate is always open.

What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

Lovely Tales
Lovely Zen tales read with a lovely voice. The music, though, is even more lovely than the tales! It is played with each story, then there is a long segment of uninterrupted music at the end of the 101 tales. What a beautiful ending it was! I plan to use this uninterrupted music for meditation...or whenever I need to soothe my soul...
Namaste... Jade Dragon

Narration and some context would be helpful
Some of these stories were really great and I could meditate on them and take some lessons from them. Other lessons didn't seem to make any sense, had no context, and left me more confused than anything. I am not a Zen master or disciple so maybe if the story was above my head having a bit of background or narration of the story would have been helpful.
I enjoyed the narration. She was pleasant and told the stories well. I also loved the music.
Overall, worth listening to but not definitely could have been better.

Zen Koans
Love this narrator, wish she'd done more. Music is a little loud sometimes, but I still love it.

way too much music
Some of the stories are good Zen stories. Many of them are not good stories and nearly pointless to have included. The music is far too frequently used; before and after every single story which makes listening tedious as the stories are sometimes 30 seconds in length.

dont recommend for sleep
Music is very loud between the stories...maybe twice as loud as the reading. Would be great if there was a more quiet version.

Tiny stories, gigantic morals!
Such an inspirational collection of short stories and zen axioms, beautifully arranged. Gave me a sense of world mystery and enlightenment!

Does it need the flute every time?
The stories in this book are great and they’re read very well but every single story has a very loud piercing flute melody before and after. The audio levels between the story and the flute aren’t regulated well so the flute is always too loud and a bit obnoxious

Immeasurably re-playable!
I have had this audio version of the wonderful work Zen Flesh, Zen Bones for several years now, and I find myself drawn back to play it over again many times a year, particularly when I’m feeling drawn off the Path in my own life. It brings clarity and thoughtfulness back to the forefront of my mind.
I feel compelled in part to leave this review due to the number of lower star reviews that speak of the dissatisfaction of the music or the narrator, and this have struck me as quite ironic given the subject matter. . .
I will say in all honesty that I originally wasn’t a big fan of the narration - at first - however, I think it works well, and at times when I read the stories in text form, I hear it as Freda’s voice and it can be quite comforting. I have always been enamored by the musical interludes, as I’ve always felt that the Matsu Take Ensemble’s “The Mysterious Sound in the Bamboo” adds so much character to this audio version that I would find it a bit hollow if it didn’t have it. I also find myself listening to that album often as well. In any case, I hope that many people find this audiobook as, if I may use the term, enlightening -😉- as I have, and may the light of love and peace find a place in their hearts.
