This is the second book of R.J. Lewis’ that I’ve (tried) to listen to. The stories? Effing SUPERB!
Captive was first recommended to me an I downloaded sample on Kindle, read the first chapter and was so excited I rushed over here to audible so that I could actually “read” it. The issue there is a whole other review so let me get on with it where 𝙎&𝙇 concerned.

If you’re anything like me it’s next to impossible to he able to m sit down, cozy up with a book and actually READ it. Either someone always needs somethin’ (mama’s and housewives represent!) oooorrr come the next paragraph? I’ve suddenly had a two hour nap 🤦🏼‍♀️ SO!

Audiobooks and I have a serious attachments. I am constantly listening to a book with my BoseBuds and average 6–10 books month. And because BoseBuds are my listening device of choice? The audio itself is THE MOST IMPORTANT factor second to the book itself…… ok to be fair that’s true no matter what you’re listening on however, AirPods or any quality ‘headphones’? That’s an intimate heading experience. Like I literally cannot hear 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙡𝙨𝙚 that exists beyond the world of the book I’m reading.

Therein brings me to the gripe that left me unable to rate this book any higher and believe me when I say it left PAINS ME 😫 to not leave 5 stars but seriously WHO TF HAS FINAL SAY WITH THESE AUDIOS!?

Gah I flippin 𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚 to be that reader who goes around doggin’ in the narrator I mean that is seriously not my jam.
And Eric Sellers IS a fabulous narrator! She’s for a very pleasant voice and her performance is great—never too theatrically over the top or too monotonous 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘽𝙐𝙏!

But.

If there’s one thing I cannot stand, that is the equivalent of the renowned and universally despised nails on the chalkboard (this is actually worse IMO)?

Hearing someone’s mouth make ‘sounds’ 😖😖😖. And Mrs. Sellers mouth

I thought, and seriously flippin’ HOPE that in the beginning it was just something that happened and would surely clear up as we went on but nooooouh 😭

We’re chapters deep and it’s still goin! So I threw the towel in and will hopefully get to finish this the “old fashioned” way.

And you’re probable like, "𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴? TF 😳 this bish mean her mouth makes 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙨? 🧐”

The only way I know to describe is like—ok you know when someone’s (or your own) mouth is dry, and they’re chewing a piece of gum and they don’t ‘smack’ but they’ll roll it, or their tongue, around in their open mouth and ya just….HEAR it?

THAT’s the sound I’m talking about and I kid you not when I say it’s non. freaking. stop.
The ONLY times you’re spared the pain of hearing it is when Ms. Sellers is actively speaking. But between words and especially when there linger moments between them and during chapter breaks?


I just can’t.
I can NOT do it.

And I’m sure it’s an equipment issue more than it is a narrator one I really do enjoy Sellers other than this one performance but man, whoever was responsible for giving the final edit and green light for this audiobook to be published?

When I travel I enjoy listening to books,
Sex, Lies.and Nikolai was a book I couldn’t stop listening to.
I liked the story and I look forward to hearing to more of his books.

Erica Sellers is an easy listen, very good voice.
Even if a book is good, I will stop listening if the voice is not right.
I will look for more books with her narrating them.
