Laurence Dalziel is worn down and washed up, and for him, the BDSM scene is all played out. Six years on from his last relationship, he's pushing 40 and tired of going through the motions of submission. Then he meets Toby Finch. Nineteen years old. Fearless, fierce, and vulnerable. Everything Laurie can't remember being.

Toby doesn't know who he wants to be or what he wants to do. But he knows, with all the certainty of youth, that he wants Laurie. He wants him on his knees. He wants to make him hurt, he wants to make him beg, he wants to make him fall in love. The problem is, while Laurie will surrender his body, he won't surrender his heart. Because Toby is too young, too intense, too easy to hurt. And what they have - no matter how right it feels - can't last. It can't mean anything. It can't be real.

Yet another enjoyable read from Alexis Hall. And it definitely doesn’t hurt that the narrator could read the dictionary and I’d still listen. 😉

Loved it

I really enjoyed both narrators and their portrayal of the characters. I feel like the voices are spot on.
love the story.

I loved, loved, loved this book. It's still wonderful, I'll still listen, but the original narrator was so much better than this updated version. I see the desire to have two separate narrators for the two POV characters, but the original narrator did a much better job keeping two distinct voices when one chapter belonged to one person while making the other's dialogue in their section so much more seamless.

Why was the narrator changed?

Not the usual D/s dynamic but the author makes it work. The guys work their sexual dynamic out far in advance of their relationship but they do work them out together, with understandable hiccups. I liked the realization that having an age gap, while not inherently bad, requires more deliberate thought, and purpose built connections, to make the relationship strong. It takes a while for them to realize they aren’t just hooking up and a while longer to admit it to each other and figure out what’s needful.

I was a little worried that Toby was too ignorant of some how-tos of specific play toys to use them safely. That was my biggest quibble. I thought it was a little odd that a younger adult without much previous prowess wound up providing such satisfaction with an experienced partner. BDSM with potential for damage isn’t something one should fumble with in ignorance in the age of the internet, yet while Toby mentioned he’d looked up some things, he seemed to have skipped some basics. The scene ineptitude seemed not to matter as much as I’d feared and didn’t lead to avoidable damage, which kept me wary. I think it turned out he just didn’t care about ropes specifically & did pay enough attention to body language that his stamina or finesse wasn’t the key factor in success.

The whole mini getaway to Oxford was delightful and charming. The catastrophic lush of a friend was interesting. (Also, I had a prof who’d been at Oxford for a while talk about the conveyor mechanism for passing the port over the fireplace. Glad to see it from another source.) And then there’s the mom who likes to be shocking, which oddly, helps Toby integrate with the academics and explains why he knows himself early even if he doesn’t know his career plans.

Steam: Hot Hot. Heavy focus on sex that gets kinkier theoughout. The kink is there from scene one. I found their top/bottom dynamic unexpectedly verse. But the pain is pretty physically mild through most of the book for all it contains M/M explicit BDSM scenes both private and public. And sometimes it’s lighter fare with guys just having sexy takeout.

Narration: I liked it. It was easy listening. There was some separation of voices for each POV (dual) which tended to be most notable when starting scenes so it was easy to keep track. Toby sounded appropriately teenagerish. The volume sometime went up in his scenes though, so watch for that if using headphones.

A good weird

OMG this one! I've read the book a few times and loved it so much. I was kind of scared to start with the audio book, but holy hell this was perfect!
The narrators were just so perfect for the characters and the story itself is amazing!

Best book ever! Best narration ever!

The story is always 4 or 5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

it's like an A+

as good as the ebook

Sometimes you revisit a movie or read a book you once loved, only to discover something has dramatically change. It’s the material or it’s you, but it’s not the same.

I read For Real by Alexis Hall for the first time close to nine years ago and came back to these pages with trepidation. Of course I did. Revisiting something often makes me ask, who was this person? This person I used to be had loved this and aghast I wonder, why?

So inching my way slowly to For Real, cautiously I consume one word and then the next.

Only to find the words on the page dance, leave me ravaged and broken, then twisting again and at once I’m enraptured. It was everything and more than I remembered 🖤

Remembering, For Real

I loved the angst and love. I love the way they submit to each other. Thank you to the writer and the performers.

a love story as it should be

This is a first. I just listened to a long audiobook and I am lost as to what to say about it. Alexis writes masterfully (in several subgenres) and he never disappoints. In this one, he awed me. If you ask me to tell you the plot, it's basic: Laurie, 37, doctor, meets Toby, 19, line cook at a greasy spoon, in a "private" club. Pretty basic and you think: Oh, I know where this is going! Well, you are wrong. Yes, it's a very spicy book but the twists in this are used in a way that throw you off. For starters, the Dom? It's the 19-year-old. The emphasis is much more on the psychological and emotional aspects of domination and submission than on whips and chains.

The development of their relationship is organic. Laurie is pretty much stupefied that, after becoming a little jaded for Reasons, he is engulfed in feelings for this (as his friends called him) fetus. Toby is very 19 in some instances but incredibly mature most of the time.

What I mean is that, as he always does, Alexis pulls you into this unexpected romance and you fully drawn and invested.

All in all, this is book about connection, finding out everything about someone and being vulnerable enough to let them know everything about you.

Though number 3 in the Spires series, this is a standalone as all the other ones. The book has been previously released and now has an expanded edition but this edition of the audiobook remains as is, which is a delight because it was beautifully narrated by Paul Berton and John Hartley, who are perfectly cast.

So good!

I loooooooooved this book when I first read it. And now I love it even more. John and Paul's voices were absolutely stunning, true to the character I pictured, and had me swooning with love for these characters all over again.
This is one I will listen to over and over again!

Get this right now!
