The changing
seasons always invite a mixed bag of emotions. Some spend the fall complaining about how much they already miss the summer, while others can’t get enough of the vivid scenery, and spend their weekends apple picking and sipping cider against gorgeous backdrops of yellows, reds, and oranges. And then there are those—you know the type—who start playing Christmas songs way too early. But has anyone else noticed how...otherworldly this time of year is? The encroaching darkness, the early morning fog, the light frost that makes the ground look like it’s been gently kissed by a snow queen? Fall brings a sense of mysticism, and I can’t help but reflect that in my listening habits. Who else is in for a fantasy-filled fall? Share your current listens with me @kdobooks.

Historia
Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality. Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the more inextricably she becomes tied to it. Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother was a dreamer...and a killer. She has seen what dreaming can do to a person. And she has seen the damage that dreamers can do. But that is nothing compared to the destruction that is about to be unleashed....

Speaking of otherworldly…
I’m a big fan of Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle series, so I can’t wait to dive into her latest audiobook. My fellow editor Melissa beat me to it, and here’s what she had to say: Stiefvater addicts can rejoice in the beginning of a whole new trilogy about our beloved goth-like misfit, Ronan Lynch, plus the full Brothers Lynch trio, Adam Parrish, and even more characters to fall in love with. Listeners who arrive at this novel by other means need not fear if they’ve never listened to any of Maggie Stiefvater’s previous works. Call Down the Hawk derives from The Raven Cycle but it stands on its own as a complete story. Will Patton returns to helm this new trilogy as narrator and his voice is just as melodic and mesmerizing as we’ve known it to be, so I can safely say that all is right with the world.

Historia
In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery - Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents - two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family.

A family affair
Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s graphic memoir Hey, Kiddo grabbed me by the feels right from the get-go. It’s a moving, personal account of Jarrett’s childhood and how he found solace in his art as he dealt with a mom who was an addict, a dad who wasn’t in the picture, and two (loving) grandparents who thought their child-rearing years were behind them. Given the personal nature of the memoir, Jarrett wanted the audiobook to be as authentic as possible, so he narrates along with more than a dozen of his family members and friends from growing up. He even got all three of his own kids involved (including the newborn baby you hear crying, played by Jarrett’s infant son). It’s an unforgettable listening experience.

For two years, six months, fourteen days, eleven hours and sixteen minutes, Subject Six-Eight-Four - ‘Jane Doe’ - has been locked away and experimented on, without uttering a single word. As Jane’s resolve begins to crack under the influence of her new - and unexpectedly kind - evaluator, she uncovers the truth about Lengard’s mysterious ‘program’, discovering that her own secret is at the heart of a sinister plot...and one wrong move, one wrong word, could change the world.

Australia’s answer to Red Queen
One of the editors in our Sydney office (thanks, Karen!) tipped me off to this listen. In Whisper, Lynette Noni has created a dystopian world that feels familiar yet wholly original. For more than two years our heroine—known simply as Jane Doe—has been held prisoner and tortured while tests and experiments are conducted on her. Soon after her care is placed in the hands of the enigmatic yet kind Landon Ward, Jane discovers that she’s actually a part of a secret government subplot, and she must quickly decide where her loyalties lie. Whisper is enthralling and compulsive, and Tamala Shelton’s narration is expertly nuanced. I’m so excited that the second installment in the series has just come out—I can’t wait to hear what happens next.
