Greetings
from West Hollywood, where it’s a cool 65 degrees and at least half a dozen fellow hotel guests are sitting poolside in their bathing suits. Gotta admire that tenacity! I’m out here in LA to talk to the wonderful Celeste Barber, whose upcoming memoir Challenge Accepted! I absolutely love. (I promise you'll be hearing more about it soon!) We met yesterday and chatted about everything from ADD to open heart surgery to mean girls in junior high. As we talked, she confessed that she’d doubted she had a whole book in her until she started writing. But as she buckled down to write, it unleashed a flood of memories from a very interesting life indeed. I think that’s what I love most about memoir—all of us are a little weird, messy, and resilient, and we all have a damn good story to tell. Even you. ❤️-

Historia
In I.M., Isaac Mizrahi offers a poignant, candid, and touching look back on his life so far. Growing up gay in a sheltered Syrian Jewish Orthodox family, Isaac had unique talents that ultimately drew him into fashion and later into celebrity circles that read like a who’s who of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: Richard Avedon, Audrey Hepburn, Anna Wintour, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Meryl Streep, and Oprah Winfrey, to name only a few.

Fashion + memoir = art
Speaking of interesting lives and memoirs I’m loving, I have two words for you: Isaac Mizrahi. Even if you go into his memoir knowing very little about the larger-than-life designer himself (raises hand), Mizrahi will win you over instantly with his flair for describing outfits as though each one is the single most important ingredient of a film auteur’s masterpiece. And his wonderfully frenetic narration is the icing on the cake. His story made me curious about other fashion memoirs, and it turns out there’s a pretty rich tradition. Enjoy!

Harness wind: check!
In people are amazing
exhibit #2,398, William Kamkwamba was just a kid when he read about a wind turbine in a library book and decided to build one himself to help end the drought and famine that continuously plagued his village in Malawi. Enter Chiwetel Ejiofor—the star of 12 Years a Slave—who read Kamkwamba’s story and was so moved that he decided to bring it to the screen for his directorial debut (which premiered earlier this month). My favorite thing about this loving collaboration between two artists is the deeply personal perspective they were each able to bring to this incredible story.

Historia
As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy", they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation. It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

Forget everything you think you know about gender
Whether you pick up Jacob Tobia’s dazzling diamond of a memoir to commemorate International Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, or simply because Jacob is one of the most charming and brilliant human beings you’ll ever have the pleasure of spending 11 hours with over the course of an audiobook, I highly recommend Sissy. This shimmering memoir beautifully explores gender, family, community, and what it’s like to navigate the world as a gender nonbinary person. I loved Sissy so much, in fact, that it was my editors pick for best new memoir of the month!

Mix tapes: We all have our favorites. Stick one into a deck, press play, and you’re instantly transported to another time in your life. For Rob Sheffield, that time was one of miraculous love and unbearable grief. A time that spanned seven years, it started when he met the girl of his dreams, and ended when he watched her die in his arms.

Love finds a way
Are there love stories in every genre? My fellow editor Melissa recently posed this question to our editorial team, and I loved the challenge of coming up with my all-time favorite memoirs about love. The bummer news is that many of the greatest love memoirs are also grief memoirs (more on that when you click below), but the good news is that they’re also incredibly moving and beautiful.

An insightful, candid, and inspiring memoir from Karamo Brown - Queer Eye’s beloved culture expert - as he shares his story for the first time, exploring how the challenges in his own life have allowed him to forever transform the lives of those in need. When Karamo Brown first auditioned for the casting directors of Netflix’s Queer Eye, he knew he wouldn’t win the role of culture expert by discussing art and theater. Instead, he decided to redefine what “culture” could - and should - mean for the show. He took a risk and declared, “I am culture.”
