February is a special time
of year for me because it’s Black History Month. Even though it’s sadly just one month, Black History Month is an integral time of year to truly focus on the foundation of America and countless other countries. It is a time to not only celebrate what it means to be Black in the world, but also the important contributions made by Black people. To get in the spirit of February, I scoured our library to bring you some of the best mysteries, thrillers, and tales of horror by Black authors.I also have to give a quick belated shout-out to Valentine’s Day. Even though pink is not the new black according to my wardrobe, chocolates and gifts are right up my alley. Back in elementary school, my teachers would bring in treats and cards for all the kids on Valentine’s Day. It was such a pure time! Don’t cue the
awwwwsjust yet, because as time flies by that pretty pink can turn to a sweet blood red rather quickly. Let me show you the thin line between love and obsession!
Whether you’re here to lift every voice or bring in the love, enjoy!
A thrilling collection from diverse Black voices
While I was choosing stories for this collection, I realized I had been operating under a limited scope. Black History Month doesn’t have to be a celebration of just African American history—it can also include Caribbean, African, and many more historical perspectives. With that in mind, I bring you a list I’m quite proud of. Even though I’m rather fond of the scary things in life, I grew up not really reading as many Black mystery and thriller authors as I would’ve liked. Truth be told, I believe the genre still needs a greater variety of voices. I hope this collection will inspire some minds out there to provide the next thrill for generations to enjoy!
Horror to the People
Love is not always peaches and cream
Since this is also the month of l’amour, I felt the need to sprinkle a nice helping of cynicism on folks. Why? Well, simply because it’s fun. Valentine’s Day is a day for new lovers, old lovers, and even almost lovers, and I’m taking the opportunity to show that sometimes love is overrated...or a tad obsessive (take your pick). If you have a healthy dose of negativity, this list is for you! From stalkers to ghostly lovers, these are some of my favorite toxic lovers and love stories to boot. You can enjoy these as a carefree single person or as a cuffed up person, so don’t be dismayed—sometimes love does prevail. Listen and find out!

Freelance Writer Appreciation Week
Did you know Stephen King began as a freelance writer? Since I haven’t forgotten my New Year’s Resolution yet (honestly shocking), I bring from my calendar to yours: Freelance Writer Appreciation Week. What’s that, you ask? It’s a week when self-employed writers get a little recognition for all their underappreciated contributions, and this year it fell on February 9-15.
I grew up on Stephen King, and it makes me proud to see that even he, in all his horror-tastic greatness, started from humble beginnings. It goes to show that sometimes freelancing can lead to best-sellers! His upcoming horror anthology, If It Bleeds, includes four new spooky tales by the horror master—and, as usual, they’ll leave you wishing they were even longer and you, braver. Because I’m the queen of no spoilers, you’ll have to prepare yourself for a fright this coming May.
